I know, right! This thing uses so much more power than, say, two 7970s.
I hope that someday Nvidia and AMD can understand what makes Intel CPUs so good, their low power consumption. It is definitely worth it to trade performance for TDP, it's what Intel has been touting for years and it's working for them, look at their market share. Haswell is being marketed as a success all over other outlets, like my Google News feed. They traded performance in for lower TDP and it's a huge success!
GPUs will not really take off until we start seeing AMD and Nvidia sacrificing performance in order to get our GPUs into a 95w power envelope. I would gladly take 5% increases in performance per generation in GPUs in exchange for reasonable heat and power consumption.
Does that sound stupid to you? Because that's what every enthusiast that puts power consumption over performance sounds like to me. Power consumption is just an excuse to give enthusiasts under-performing chip. And energy costs aren't that expensive, and if someone lives in an area with cheap power, they shouldn't have to sacrifice performance for power consumption because someone lives in some place with high power requirements. If you can't afford it, don't do it. If you don't want to spend a ton of money on gas, you don't buy a fast car that uses more gas than a prius.
This whole "I'm an enthusiasts I want the fastest things I can afford and then two tweak them but MUH POWER CONSUMPTION!" needs to die a quick death, it's the most inane and ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
