Power Supply Dimensions? (Old Dell Dimension 8400)

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
I am in the process of trying to upgrade an old Dell Dimension 8400 .

I have am replacing the old Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX (Great Card btw) with a newerish SAPPHIRE HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 PCIE

I am trying to find a replacement for the old PSU, and upgrade to a newer one that is 500-600 Watts, and falls into the price range of about $50-$70.
(The manual for the Sapphire 5770 says 500 watt minimum 600 watt optimal)

I am having some trouble finding one that fits properly before I purchase it.
I heard that you need specifically a "Dell Compatible" Power supply, and that other ones do not fit in dell cases.

Where can I find these specific power supplies?

The current PSU's Dimensions are as follows;

Height 42.5 cm (16.7 inches)
Width 18.1 cm (7.1 inches)
Depth 44.7 cm (17.6 inches)

Additional Information
;

DC power supply:
Wattage 350 W
Heat dissipation 460.7 BTU/hr
fixed-voltage power supply — 110 V at 50/60 Hz
manual selection and auto-sensing power supplies — 90 to 135 V at
50/60 Hz; 180 to 265 V at 50/60 Hz; 100 V at 50/60 Hz for Japanese
computers
Backup battery 3-V CR2032 lithium coin cell

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Size isn't a problem. You can mount the PSU anywhere, though you may have to modify the case to make it fit.

The problem is that some dell computers use a different pinout on the power plugs.

Here is the standard pinout. You'll have to compare the colors of the wires (and hopefully the voltages too, with a volt meter) in the old PSU to see if a new PSU will match the plug on your dell.
