Can't get 3570k overclock stable?

Hi,

I'm trying to overclock my 3570k to 4.5GHz, and can't seem to get it stable. For example, when I'm playing some games such as Counter-Strike: GO, I'll get an Appcrash in the event viewer, and the game itself will either stop responding or just simply quit. Same thing happens with many other games, and it usually freezes prime95 after something like 3 hours. No BSOD though, just freezes and appcrashes.
Here are my specs and BIOS settings.
System (Hardware) (Click to show)
  • i5 3570k
  • 16GB Kingston HyperX Beast @ 1600MHz
  • Asus GTX 660 Ti
  • Asus P8Z77-V LE PLUS

I should point out that it's perfectly stable at default clocks, and the rest of the rig works perfectly. RAM is very good quality and goes right through Memtest with no issue (and even overclocks really well - though I'm not doing so right now). The 660 Ti is fine as well, and since crashes only happen when I'm overclocked, I think it's fair to say it has to do with the overclock wink.gif Drivers and all are of course the latest, on a clean install of Windows 7.

(Yes, I did just copy the Ivy Bridge Overclocking Guide format, for the sake of clarity)

So, what can I do? Yes, of course, I tried upping the voltage, even over 1.4, but it didn't change anything, if not just make the CPU much hotter. I can do general work just fine at 1.32-1.34, but that's it (voltage at which I'd expect it to get up to 4.5, from what I see from other people).
As I said, it just crashes the games (which really aren't that intensive), so no information, as you'd get from a BSOD. And as I said again, it's definitely the CPU - the other components are fine.

Edit: Now that I read around some more - 1.32v seems to be a lot for 4.5GHz? Should I be able to achieve 4.5 with a lower voltage?

It shows that Turbo is on, it should be off. Try that smile.gif

Thanks for the quick reply smile.gif

How would I do that? If I disable Turbo Mode, I become unable to set a custom ratio (defaults to 3.4GHz), and if I set a custom ratio, I can't disable Turbo Mode. What's up with that? frown.gif

(By unable, I mean Turbo Mode is set to enabled, but the option itself is greyed out and cannot be changed)

Ahh Ok, no problems there then.

And 1.32 is about average for 4.5Ghz

you don't have to disable turbo but if you wanted to you set the multifplier in the cpu power manager menu and it will allow turbo to be disabled, plus I would assume once your stable you going to switch to an offset voltage. some chips just can't overclock high, I would say that 1.3v for 4.5ghz on ivy is the standard anything lower is considered one of the better ones. I had 3 that needed more than 1.3v for 4.5

Okay, but the thing is, I can't seem to even be able disable Turbo. I tried to do what you suggested, and set the ratio in the CPU Power Management menu, but the moment I type in "45" and press enter, the Turbo Mode option switches to "enabled" and can't be changed.

If Turbo isn't the issue though, what can I do? I understand that each chip will have a mind of its own, but there's still an "expected" slice of voltages for it.

Have you tried 4.4? Some chips just don't OC well.
