How many channels does 24GB (6x4GB) run in? Upgrading from 16GB, trying to decide between 24 and 32.

I currently have 16GB corsair vengeance 1600 running in quad channel in my Sabertooth X79 + 3930k (4x4GB) . I have 4GB allocated to a ram disk (using primo ramdisk ultimate). I am considering either upgrading to 24GB, or just going to 32GB. What I am not sure about is how the channels will work with 24gb, as I would have 6 DIMMs. I am guessing I won't be able to take advantage of quad channel anymore? Would it be worth it to just grab another 4x4 16gb set for 32GB? 24GB will definitely be sufficient at this point, but if I would get enough of a performance increase by running 32GB/quad it might be worth it and I could just allocate more space to my ram disk. Any advice is appreciated.

also before anyone mentions it, i am not concerned about mixing different sets, as the 16gb i have now is an 8gb set with two other individually purchased 4gb and it runs perfectly fine (they are all the same 4gb vengeance modules however, just not from a 16gb kit.)

No one able to shed some light here? I just want to know how many channels 24GB will run in, or would it be worth it to go with 8 sticks of 4GB for quad channel.

As long as 4 modules are installed in the initial quad channel slots, the system will run as quad channel. It does not matter if there is 1, 2, or 3 modules in the secondary quad channel slots. If 4 modules are not populated in the secondary slots, those simply would not run as quad channel, only the first 4 in the primary slots.

Cheers

Interesting, thanks for your reply tim. I didn't even consider that might be how it would work. I suppose I will pick up an 8GB kit for now, and eventually bump it to 32 down the line.

i always thought on x79, 3 or 6 sticks of the same density would run in triple channel :thinking
