CPU upgrade help!!! fx60,0pty 185 or keep 4800??? - Page 2

FX = Opertons with unlocked multi's/only from the middle of the wafer
Opertons = Standard chips (A64) that passes silicon checks/generally from the middle of the wafer.
Athlon 64's = Opertons/FX'es that didn't pass the silicon checks/everywhere from the wafer.

Steppings usually depends on luck and where on the wafer it is located.

FX'es are generally a waste of money if you have a good mobo, so get a equal Operton (180 is 2.6, like the FX-55. 185 is 2.8 GHz, like the FX-57)

Then again, the only difference is the multiplier.
You generally want a multiplier at 10/11 because it works out best on all motherboards.

DFI's can generally use all multi's due to their awesomeness (self-made word )

opty 185 is 2.6 GHz

i'd be leary of gettin a 185. not much is really known about them. plus they don't run the CCB*E steppings. and you can actually get an opty 165 all the way up to the 185 speeds w/ stock voltage. so it makes no sense to even spend the money on a 185. plus whats cooler to say? that you have a proc thats overclocked 400 MHz or one thats overclocked 1200 MHz

sorry , but i gotta stick up for poor lil fx60 a lil bit there, the fx60 i can get hold of for 100 quid more than the 165

+ the thaught of havin a 1.8Ghz stock cpu that 'with the right stepping' can go at 2.8 - 3.0ghz seems pointless to upgrade from my 2.4 stock 4800 that hits 2.9Ghz peace of pi$$ rock stable, and i have got to a smidge over 3Ghz anyway.... sorry i just want a hard core chip thats happy as herman @ 3Ghz fully loaded. 185 or fx60? any 1 got 1 of these and played with them?

ps. herman .... dont ask

Did you try setting your PCIe in the 108 to 112MHz range?

well yes my opty just so happens to be 24 hours prime stable + multiple runs of superpi 32m and BF2 + CSS for hours upon end...

i've had it all the way to 3.1 GHz but it takes too much voltage to get it stable. makes too much heat. the only thing i can do at 3.1 GHz is superpi 1m runs.

thats why i say you'll be better off getting the opty 165 because it is a performer. it'll deliver for you. i had an fx-55 proc before and it was a nice piece at stock speeds, but when i started overclocking it and trying to get to 3 GHz i was disappointed. took too much voltage and time.
