Crucial M4 failing after two years?

Thread Starter
Ran into an issue last night, randomly while browsing everything froze up and computer crashed to a BSOD. Upon reboot, my 64gb Crucial M4 boot drive was undetected. Loaded into the asus smart bios only to find that the SSD was not a boot option in the boot list. Let it sit for a bit and when I started it back up, loaded into windows fine. This morning I noticed it crashed with the same symptoms. after a few minutes of it sitting, everything booted fine and the M4 was back in the boot priority list.

Thinking it was a failing HDD, I launched seatools and ran some diagnostics. Both the short and long generic test passed, however the short self test failed with the reason 'index was outside the bounds of the array'.

Trying to figure out the cause, any ideas? Have not checked for overheating yet, however I find it odd that this would be an issue all of a sudden after two years of flawless performance.

Thanks in advance.

My M4 has been running nearly 15,000 hours straight, hopefully it's just the firmware for you. I updated mine as soon as the fix came out some time ago.

Seems to be the same symptoms as I read on the toms hardware article. I've been out of the loop with this stuff for so long..

Uh oh..

'There are no SSDs on this system that need to be updated"
-Auto firmware updater

Edit:
After a couple hours of reading and fiddling, I figured it out. Had to unplug every hard drive but my M4 and then boot the firmware update via USB. All is running well now. And yeah, it was exactly what the common issue was - my M4 had 5,500 hours on it.

My 120GB M4 just did this same thing past 2 days. Its got over 1300 power on's, and 1000 re-allocated sectors. SSD-Life still says 100% healthy, but its toast. I did the firmware update same week it came out MONTHS ago. SSDs just go out after awhile. I think my BSOD codes were 00f4, and 003b, repeatedly. It happens, but I will try a firmware flash again just for giggles and see. Already bought a new 840 Pro.
