PC upgrade advice/help.

Thread Starter
Ok. I'm planning on upgrading my socket 775 PC soon but, due to budget limitations, I can't do it in one swoop so what I intend to do is buy a solid GPU now, and upgrade my CPU and mobo when I'm by the means (the option that allows me to play games asap). My current specs are...

CPU: E5700 3.0GHz Dual Core
Mobo: Asus P5G41T-M LX
RAM: 2GB DDR3 1333MHz
GPU: Sapphire HD7770 GHz Edition
PSU: CM Silent Pro M700

So my questions is - Would the Powercolor HD7870 Myst Edition work on my Asus P5G41T-M LX motherboard?

I'm planning to go Ivy Bridge if that helps. Also, a friend of mine had some compatibility issues with the GPU and his Intel mobo (socket 1155) and he needed to update his bios for the card to work.

Any other suggestions would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
(and sorry for the long post).

I've never heard of anyone needing to update their motherboard's BIOS in order to make a video card work. I think that the 7870 would work, but it would be very bottlenecked by the E5700, and so your performance gain might not be as big as you would like even though you're planning to upgrade to Ivy Bridge when that becomes possible for you.

So then when playing games, would this bottleneck drastically affect game performance?

I'm not sure, but it would definitely be lower performance than having an Ivy Bridge CPU.

Ok, I guess I'll do a little more research first, and probably save up a little more. Thanks for the help.

I know this is in the wrong section, but about the bios update I'm pretty sure it has to do with UEFI bios only, and then I think it is only on some boards. It should be no problem on your board but then again I don't know that for sure. It worked no problem on my board which is an older board without UEFI bios. Just make sure you have the right options enabled in bios. These are some pretty good cards for the price alsothumb.gif! They do tend to run a little hot though so make sure your case has adequate airflow.

Thanks for the response beezweeky. I've currently got a CM Elite 430 with 4x 120mm fans in it - would that be sufficient cooling? And assuming that the card works and that there's a bottleneck as TwoCables said - would I still be able to play the latest games at 1080p with no problems?

Yes, I think it would do a pretty decent job at cooling, though I would make sure to have one of those fans on the window side panel blowing directly on the card and cooling should be fine. I would assume it would bottle neck at least some, but you would more gain from a gpu upgrade than a cpu/motherboard upgrade since you would be coming from a 7770 to a 7870 XT. You should be able to play on 1080 with a decent framerate though, and you can always upgrade the cpu/motherboard down the road. That is my opinion though. Check out this thread and ask there also! Good luck!thumb.gif
