Whats your mobo?
That CPU should do 3.6-3.8 like clock work. The Q9550 in my HTPC has a noticeable difference between 3.2ghz and 4ghz with my gtx465 @850 in a lot of games. Though you should be able to pop in something like a 7950 or 660ti and be perfectly fine.

Personally I would go with a 7950 as they are pretty solid cards and compete more then the gtx670. Comes with couple of free games, and they overclock vary good if you are into that thing. The frame Times problem has been fixed for single card use already, so no stuttering, just smooth frame rate. Many games are smoother on AMD cards now, CF driver is coming some times this or next month but your not using CF anyways.

Otherwise if Nvidia is a must a 660ti would be a perfect fit with that q9550.

It's really easy dude, just go into the bus up the bus speed and add voltage heaps of guides around, but you'll need to change to an aftermarket cooler first.
Buy the card first and see if there are any problems first, then overclock if you must.
