New Haswell build (first post)

Thread Starter
EDIT: Finished building and cable managing, and currently doing some stress tests

Currently 11 hours Prime95 stable 4.6 GHz @ 1.26 Vcore. Testing longer because I've had OCs fail at 3-6 hrs.

Hello all, I've been a long time lurker but decided to post because I'm just looking for opinions on a new Haswell build. I have not built a new rig in a long time now, as I'm upgrading from a Conroe E8400, GTX 260 Core 216, and Intel X-25M G2 80 GB. It's disappointing that we don't see the revolutionary gains in Haswell, but that was to be expected, and it makes sense to upgrade to it from Core 2 Duo.
Projected build (all prices are rough estimates of the best deal in CAD, so they need to be from Canadian retailers): (Click to show)
CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K - $350
CPU Cooler: Swiftech H220 - $133
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H - $180
Memory: G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory - $150
Storage: Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB - $242
Storage: 1TB+ drive - not sure yet
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB - $420 (about 50/50 between this and the HD 7970)
Case: Corsair 650D - $150

Total cost: ~$1625 CAD
Budget around 2k.

Parts that I'll be re-using:
Sound card: Auzentech X-FI Prelude
PSU: Corsair HX620 (website and blog says that it is likely compatible with Haswell, but looks like they haven't completed testing yet)

Current PCPartPicker list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/128PB

Some notes:

I'll definitely be overclocking this system, and the H220 will be a staple for the system. I like that particular DDR3-2400 RAM kit, as the price premium over a regular 1600 kit is only about $30 on average. I'll mostly likely be gaming on a primary 24" 1920x1200 screen, with a secondary 22" 1680x1050 screen for other tasks. The 4770k was my CPU of choice, since I might be doing other tasks that could make use of the extra threads.

I'm still thinking on what kind of 1TB+ HDD that I should be getting, but I'll be looking for something reliable, relatively fast for a HDD, and something that doesn't break the bank too much.

I suggest a WD10EZEX 1TB as it's WD's fastest consumer drive right now (althrough being marketed as a Blue). You could probably just go for 8GB of memory here which is more than enough for any regular use.

They don't say that it's not compatible, they just don't have any data.

Maybe you can tell me, why would a psu could not be compatible with haswell ? If you have the 8pin connector your all set aren't you?

I thought that the Haswell PSU compatibility was only a problem if you intended in using C6 or C7 states?

For hard the drvie either the WD blue WD10EZEX, as mentioned above or a Seagate Barracuda 7200.14, ST1000DM001. Both 1TB but the Seagate goes up to 3TB.

Graphic card wise your best bet is possibly a 7970 or crossfired 7950s.

I doubt the PSU can handle crossfired 7950s, but I'm not sure.

There's a good deal right now for a Professional Series HX750 - I can price match it to about $100.

I might just go with that if Corsair doesn't come up with any conclusive test data within the next one or two days.

You dont need that much power unless you want two high end video cards

Even your old PSU is overkill

You can look in the database for info on which units are haswell sleep compatible
