Titan vs GTX 780: both overclocked and tested @ 1440p

Thread Starter
First, a short disclaimer: don't start flame wars, please. These are just 2 samples and results certainly are not representative of all Titans/780 out there. It's just a snapshot of my personal experience having tested both cards in my rig. I specifically do not mention cost of both cards, because this thread is not about cost. It's about performance and overall experience.

Now, that we got that out of the way, let's meet today's contenders:

EVGA GTX Titan:
Stock cooled, flashed with RR09SS bios, does not throttle at all, completely game-stable @ 1150/3275 with +25mv (1175mv effective). Stock boost was 993Mhz before the flash. ASIC quality was around 72.

EVGA GTX 780 SC with ACX cooler:
Crème de la Crème of 780, stock clocks are much higher than reference cards. Boosts to 1097, game-stable @ 1228/3348 with +38mv (1200mv effective). Stock bios for now. There is a little throttling when card hits 106% power limit, but it is nowhere near as bad as it was with Titan on stock bios. ASIC is 73.2

As you can see, 780 clocked considerably higher than Titan. ACX cooler is just superb and allows lower temps and is much much quieter than stock Titan cooler (which itself is the best reference cooler I've ever laid my hands on). The reason I chose these clocks is to simulate my regular gaming experience with both cards. With any more voltage/clockspeed, Titan was getting uncomfortably loud and hot. ACX cooler on 780, on the other hand, is soo good, it allows 1.2V and 1200+ comfortably, while keeping card quieter and cooler compared to Titan.

I have tested both cards in handful of games and synthetic benchmarks. Let's get to numbers, shall we.... Rig specs in sig, 320.18 drivers for both Titan and 780.

Settings/Screenshots:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Well, there you have it. The numbers pretty much speak for themselves, but to summarize my experience:

Titan is still a faster card, even with clocks disadvantage. I am keeping 780 ACX though. As you can see, the difference in performance is negligible, you just won't see it in day to day gaming. However, ACX is significantly quieter, and runs a bit cooler. And that makes big difference for someone like me, who keeps the cards on air and values acoustics in day to day usage. I have no use for Titan's enormous 6GB framebuffer, as I only play on single monitor. I have no use for Titan's 1/3 DP. Do I regret buying Titan? No. I got 3 months of insane performance out of it. Do I like 780 ACX better? You betcha.

1440p/1600p isn't the most difficult resolution to run, I wouldn't expect the results to differ more until you get to 3DS setups.
My single GK-104 handles my rez quite well, If I can't max a game I can still run it on higher settings with the goodies at 1600p; 90% of games I can throttle.

Nice OP and thanks for sharing.

thank you for the work!

i myself sold my titan as well because i was just running 1440p. i considered getting a 2nd one and maybe a third and do surround but.. the costs was too much at the time. i was able to sell my titan to an awesome fellow who did rendering and couldnt afford a quadro. i believe he will be utilizing it better than i would have.

im glad to see the performance, im excited what the FTW and classified would do (as im waiting for those) so no gaming for me for awhile!

but yah thats what i expected it to be, titan definitely one heck of a card.

Yeah, I can only imagine Titan's clear pull ahead of 780 on extreme resolutions in multi-card configs due to 6GB. Even though 780 GPU is almost as strong and scales just as amazingly with overclocks, it's 3GB VRAM would become a limiting factor real fast. But for us single screen users, both cards are pretty much the same performance-wise.

Great review! Great card!

It would be so cool if you had included 3D Vision @1080p results.

From your own experience, what would you say is the overall difference between perfomance in gaming @1080p and 1440p? +80% @1080p? Less? More?

Thank you!

Since the Titan and 780 share the same pcb design, could you do some benches using the ACX cooler on the Titan to see if there is any further room for improvement? It would be interesting to see just how good the ACX is!
