Looking for some Storage drives

Well hi there!

So I will just get to it.. biggrin.gif

Few months back my WD Caviar black 1TB Well as far as I know that's what it is haven't looked at it lol...Started to make a scratchy? bubbling, rumbling noise fairly loud...I would believe it is dieing I mainly use it for downloads, but it is the only HDD that I have so storage aswell...My System is on Intel SSD and so are my games on a second SSD biggrin.gif Gotta love SSD's
But just in case my HDD is dying I need some extra drives for storage, just storage mostly and this is where I don't know what to buy...
I was thinking here I would like to get 1TB for my Music also 1 TB for my personal folder which is growing with randomness, might be a 500Gb drive , 1TB just sounds cleaner. biggrin.gif And Possibly 3TB's for gameplay recording or that sort of stuff 3TB should be enough to mess around with ,basicly trash drive...and keep the current one as a Download drive...

Well anyway I was looking at WD drives and they have the Green ,Blue and black dives, I know how they work... Just umm not sure which to get anyway. My cousin had a 5200RPM drive in her laptop and I know how slow they are at booting up, but at storage? pure storage? Would they be enough? Cause in that case I could just take the WD green drives...You know just cause I have money doesn't mean I need to overkill on my storage for no real reason...I mean will it be that noticeably slower for music to start up that would just annoy you? Also yeah power consumption I guess...

Main question is this ( I know people have hard time following my mumbling ) Should I get Green, Blue or black drives for storage? For such things as Music, pictures and videos.

First remember, there is more than just Western Digital out there. As for pure storage, a 5400 RPM drive works great. If you're planning to record live game data though, you may want at least a 7200 RPM to keep up with the bit rate.

Yeah I know WD isn't the only one, but once you got one why change it...

Also I do realize I might need a 7200RPM drive for recording not even sure if I am going to do that, but that is a different story...

I am using a 2TB WD green in my server for pure storage.. ive had it running pretty much 24/7 for almost 2 years and no issues.. It's plenty fast and handles whatever i throw at it.. very stable drive

If you watch closely you can get 3TB Seagates for $99. I understand wanting WD but both have similar warranties now. Like was said before unless you are doing some type of recording 5400 rpm drives will be fine. At the end of the day I would buy 2X 3TB drives and use one for a backup.

For drives that you actually run programs off of, the WD10EZEX 1TB Blue is the current king of the hill. Ridiculous transfer speeds, good access times, and very good price ($20 less than the 1TB Black but with 40-60MBs faster sequential RW speeds).

For storage space, the Seagate 7200.14 series also utilize 1TB platters, giving them extremely strong sequential performance, and they're available in sizes up to 4TB. The 2 & 3TB models are available for around $90-120/ea, making them an excellent deal.

Currently, the Blacks are just lagging behind the other options, having no outstanding features aside from an extra 2yrs of warranty.
