New to online multiplayer gaming ... need help

Hi guys (in an ambiguous, non-gender-defined application)

LOOOOOOONG time PC gamer, but never seemed to get into online gaming. Love co-operative gaming (split-screen console) but never found myself in the same situation with PC.

Anyway, now I tried Planetside 2 recently and LOVE the concept but hated the reality. It was a jittery, stuttering, mis-loading, unplayable nightmare - enemies jumping across the screen in strobe-like effect. Shots fired and no effect. Terrible. Pretty sure the server was from Europe though - closest option I believe.

First of all, is my internet connection up to the task? I'm getting a cheap connection in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) that's clearly run via somewhere in Vietnam (the next country over). Practically everything here is. Below are my speed/ping tests:

So my question is, what games do you recommend? I'm into a broad spectrum of games, will try anything.

I would really like free-to-play for now. Don't have any money to be throwing around at the moment. I have a bunch of steam games, but I'm not sure what to play multiplayer wise there. Civ 5? Payday: The Heist? Most of my games are "older".

I'm under the impression that games will play better the more local the server. What games have Asian servers that aren't Starcraft, which I have no interest in playing multiplayer?

How is Star Wars TOR? What about the Star Trek Online game?

I'm intrigued, but the water is deep and cold. Help me swim! thumb.gif

(P.S - I'm not really competitive, nor am I the type to don a headset and mic and start chatting, I don't think at least. Just want to play)

Well, Rift is going FTP in the start of June, and they have servers in Asia if memory serves. There's also TERA, which is mostly Asian servers. Both MMORPG's.
League of Legends?
Counter Strike, either source or 1.6. They aren't free but low-cost with great value. More games will probably come to mind but not right now thumb.gif

Thanks for the help! Most appreciated.

I have the CS collection on Steam - bought on a whim and old memories of LAN fan.

I have friends who seem pretty into Rift, and having Asian servers would be a massive win for me. I will check it out.

I've never heard of TERA, will check that out too.

So what about my internet speeds. Sufficient for an enjoyable experience? Was my bad experience in Planetside due to long-distance servers, huge numbers of players and information?

Have some +rep for your troubles smile.gif

Your bad experience in Planetside was probably a mix of both. Your internet is slow, and local servers are an absolute must for you. Left 4 Dead 2 is fun and widely played, so maybe you can find some local servers and enjoy it. The PvP is very strategic if you play on the infected team, and coop is fun. There's also Killing Floor, a very intense survival coop game that's a blast to play.

Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm are excellent too; more realistic and authentic shooters, though they're not as widely played so finding a local server might be hard. ArmA 3 will probably have a big player base so it's worth checking out (you can try ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead demo for free on Steam). ArmA 2 with mods is my favorite coop game, the intensity is just on another level.

I have had a blast with RIFT for over a year, a change in my work schedule kept me from playing enough to enjoy the content.

Tera is sort of a JRPG, very Manga with skimpy armor and cute little furries and big bulky creatures.

I think you're right about the distance to the server caused you your troubles with Planetside. I have a 10/1Mb/s connection and I face trouble in BF3 when playing on American servers. And since most of the game is run serverside, player movement and action in particular, it seems likely to be the culprit.

Both Tera and Rift are huge games to download though. But you can download Rift for free, just like World of Warcraft.

The rep is much appreciated! smile.gif

Why dont you play Dota 2. It's free to play (you will need an invitation, I have one if you want it), and there is no in game advantages for those who spend some bucks in the game.

Have you seen Payday 2? It's not out yet and you do have to put money down for it but it looks like an awesome cooperative shooter!

your bandwidth tends to affect downloading before it affects game play, genreally speaking you need about 60FPS for a shooter online and 14-30 for fantasy type mmorpg's, always make sure your near these desired frame rates the idea is always to exceed rather than fall short.

If I where you I'd give combat arms a shot to be sure that your not experiencing any kind of lag and you may want to look into checking your latency with your planet side server (anything over 200 is generally laggy and unplayable since when you add up your mouse keyboard and screen latency it may put you and a full second behind the action on the screen)

I know my internet is 1/3rd of the download and 1/6th of the upload speed of my old connection when I lived in the US, but surely it's not *THAT* slow, right? I mean online gaming will be possible, if done intelligently.

Great suggestion re: LFD2. I forgot about that, and my laptop should be able to play that maxed out too.

Killing floor, Red Orchestra and Rising Storm aren't really my cup of tea, and ArmA certainly isn't. It looks great, but too serious and intense for my liking.

Thanks for the suggestions and consideration regardless, and have some +rep for the troubles smile.gif
