Well, I would say that making decisions based on someone eleses opinion is a problem of the person doing that. In my opinion its not particularly intelligent thing to do, but I must admit that I do that myself sometimes also. My time is finite and as such I am unable to reach an informed decision myself in everything I do. So I trust an expert. My definition of an expert is not a random forums user though or even some arbitrary media outlet. For example, when it comes to PSU's I take note when Phaedrus in these forums expresses his opinion - if its backed up with some reasosning why its this or that way even better, but I know he is expert on these and his opinion counts in that. Some random user who I do not know of anything I take with grain of salt, while I take note of his suggestions unless they sound like just random trolling I keep my reservations and do my research around the subject.
Same way, when I'm deciding what numerical method to use for solving some particular kind of problem I trust to some extent people who have solved similar problems in the past and have a track record which I can look at (say, some publications in respected peer reviewed journals on the subject) - if they say some method is unsuitable I take that they have cheked it and dont spend my time double cheking unless I have past experience which indicates that they might not be correct.
So - informed decisions are good things, but you do not have enough time to reach an informed decision in everything you do. You just have to be aware what are your opinions and what standpoints you have are based on significant enough information to be "informed". Would be honest to note which is which ofc, but its not that common in internet forums and even if there would be saying something on the lines of "trust me I'm an expert" is not particularly heavyweight statement in the internet.
