[CNET] Windows 8 vies with Vista, but Windows 7 gains - Page 3

i would love windows 8 on my desktop if it could use a simple motion remote (like roku) to control selection and movment when not using a mouse. dont know why MS hasnt tried implementing something similar yet. and no NOT KINECT, i HATE Tai Chi TRAINING

I can see what they were trying to do but at the end of the day we dont want a touch screen UI for a pc. Some of us dont want our hotmail/outlook accounts linked to all the paraphernalia.

For me it just does not work. Too many negatives and only a few positives. Why should we accept a half baked idea of an OS. Lucky i only had to pay $45 for it. As a few have said its early on let it mature a little. but ill be running Win 7 for as long as possible.

My 5 year old son figured it out for christ sakes and we've got grown men crying that it's too hard to use? LMAO!

It's not that people can't learn, but people do not want to be bothered to learn a completely unnecessary UI being forced upon them by a company trying to consolidate desktops and touchscreens together. We don't care for it and we don't want it. It has nothing to do with intelligence or the Start button, but rather getting forced to adjust to a new UI just because MS wanted to try and herd us. Especially when considering that all the people here on OCN knows how to assemble computers in their sleep, you really think we can't figure out the new UI if we really, really wanted to?

I personally have a ton of other things I rather do with my time, free or otherwise, than pick up a UI that I don't consider worthwhile of my time. I could be fishing, BBQ'ing, listening to music, playing games, ect. Why should I waste time adjusting to W8's layout, especially when W7 works incredibly well? I don't have to and I won't is the only correct answer here. MS will continue to find this out.

Those are still mostly business users where the companies have not yet upgraded from Windows XP. My mom's company still have some computers running on Win2K. Businesses will typically upgrade very, very late, because 1) it is expensive 2) OS changes disrupt business schedules and 3) workers don't like change from their work routines. Change = money and time lost for any business and to a lesser extent, people.

So a-year-old Win8 already caught Vista which is 7 years old ? Vista pls die already biggrin.gif

Although I don't need a new UI or a new OS and will be skipping win8 altogether, I think they should stick with win8 ui as it is. They should stick with the change. I say disable Desktop mode permanently. Because otherwise, they are admitting it was a mistake to shove it as they did.

Just what exactly is wrong with a business admitting a mistake was a mistake? I would personally have much more respect for businesses that admits to their mistakes and does something about it.

I tried Windows 8 when i installed it onto my friends pc when i rebuilt it, and Ive gotta say its not bad at all. A slight learning curve dealing with metro and moving the cursor to the right of the screen instead of to the bottom left (or where ever one has their start button). however that shouldnt be an actual issue since you always have the windows key (unless your using the tt esports meka keyboard like me)

There were lots of nice features that could be easy to adapt to (i only used it for about 1 hour). But honestly Ubuntu is harder to adapt to and its pretty easy after you use it for about 3 days (4-5hours per day)

I still wish that I could have experienced Windows XP Pro 64 bit. I used the non pro edition 32 bit with a pentium 4 1.60ghz (store said 2.0:mad:) with 2ghz of ram and did all sorts of things. So i can say MOST computer users DONT need more than that. Windows 7 Professional is nice but I had to switch to Ultimate for the language packs (I play alot of Japanese games).

All I know and can say for a fact: Dont bash something until you have tried it (unless its proven to be dangerous); because of pointless negative bashing by media and others, I missed out on Grand Theft Auto until last year (Im 20) and rock music until I was 14.

Really, the problem with Windows 8 is that it released relatively quickly after Windows 7. If 7 and 8 were switched (where 8 came after Vista, and 7 just this year), then I think it would be different. Everyone seems to love 7 so much that any change that W8 made away from W7 was met with over-reaction, and ultimately hurt sales (a lot).

Seriously guys, if you think about it, if W8 was the successor to Vista, it would be doing a lot better. Vista isn't nearly as bad as everyone thinks it is, it just had a rocky launch that left a permanent impression in everyone's minds that they couldn't overcome. And it's looking like it may be the same result with 8 - too much negative attention too early. W8 is doomed just from early word-of-mouth, regardless of any improvements they make.

I'm seriously amazed that anyone on OCN would side with Windows 8.

Its all good and i love hearing peoples opinions because we only learn and grow from it.

Ive got a Samsung 2012 Ultra-book with Windows 8 and all i do is surf the net and watch movies. but the 2 biggest things that drive me bonkers is when i slide my finger of the touch pad when scrolling and viewing webpages it flicks into Movie player or Start window menu thingo page. And the second one is playing movies. even though i right click and select i want the file to always be played with media player of my choice it still reverts back to the Windows 8 version. OMG its annoying. Anyways im sure their are fixes for it that i can manually do. Its just the way the PC industry is going we have to hack things to get them to run how they should.
