The latest figures from Net Applications show Windows 8 with a 4.27 percent share of PCs installed worldwide in May (up from 3.84 percent in April) versus 4.51 percent for Vista.
Vista, one of Microsoft's least popular OSes, was introduced in November of 2006.
Then again, maybe we're breaking out the champagne too soon. Windows 7 still leads by a long shot at 44.85 percent and it actually made gains in May, up from 44.72 percent in April.

People are afraid to change.
People are even more afraid to change to an OS when what they have is good enough already for them. I actually respect that...why change?

Vista had around 3-4 years or retail sales pre-installed in laptops and desktops, with Macs being much more unpopular and before the tablets / smartphones became mainstream - something that shifted interest gradually away from PCs, with sales reaching record lows last few years (or at least not matching the market share of the past not even by a long-shot).

i.e. other than the Win 8 coming after a very successful Windows version, it has nothing in common with Windows Vista...

Oh that's cute. Another typical survey that doesn't reveal how many computers (or what types of computers; business? personal? servers?) were even surveyed.

Seriously I am one to try anything. However my time with Windows 8 is time and money I will never ever get back. I spent money on various hardware and software that was supposed to be compatible for it not work and me out of pocket as i tried to persevere. I had to go back to Windows 7 and I'm happy, I'm used to the layout but also everything just works. Windows 7 suits me and I'm sure it does for others.
MS started the sensationalism first!!!
Now they are bringing back the START MENU!!!
The XBOX ONE is doing real well

Nobody is forcing you to buy anything. Windows 7 is still available for purchase.

it's old, but it isn't useless.....I know it feels old, but it is enough for most people out there, and it's cheaper than vista, seven, or eight....gaming on it is fine too.....there are only like what, a few games that don't work in xp?......yea, there are some big titles that don't support it, but you also need some hefty hardware to run them too......I don't really see someone with a $1000 pc using xp for gaming, but I do see someone with a $200-$300 rig using it......I've built a bunch of rigs using used parts for people who play steam free to play games like DC, GC Impostors, Planeside 2, and TF2......I mean, you can do pretty much anything on xp.....heck, I even moved some people to Ubuntu to save money for just a 24/7 pc......for everyday xp just works

Bring back the START MENU for people who want it MS...The vast majority of people hate your glorified full screen start "screen" and don't what that crap being forced on them. People should NOT have to pay for a previously free feature.

I can see what they were trying to do but at the end of the day we dont want a touch screen UI for a pc. Some of us dont want our hotmail/outlook accounts linked to all the paraphernalia.

For me it just does not work. Too many negatives and only a few positives. Why should we accept a half baked idea of an OS. Lucky i only had to pay $45 for it. As a few have said its early on let it mature a little. but ill be running Win 7 for as long as possible.

My 5 year old son figured it out for christ sakes and we've got grown men crying that it's too hard to use? LMAO!
It's not that people can't learn, but people do not want to be bothered to learn a completely unnecessary UI being forced upon them by a company trying to consolidate desktops and touchscreens together. We don't care for it and we don't want it. It has nothing to do with intelligence or the Start button, but rather getting forced to adjust to a new UI just because MS wanted to try and herd us. Especially when considering that all the people here on OCN knows how to assemble computers in their sleep, you really think we can't figure out the new UI if we really, really wanted to?

I personally have a ton of other things I rather do with my time, free or otherwise, than pick up a UI that I don't consider worthwhile of my time. I could be fishing, BBQ'ing, listening to music, playing games, ect. Why should I waste time adjusting to W8's layout, especially when W7 works incredibly well? I don't have to and I won't is the only correct answer here. MS will continue to find this out.
