Help with setting up a temp and flow monitoring system for my PC

Thread Starter
Hi, I have been WC for awhile and have had a pump quit on my 2 times which stopped flow and was a nightmare. So, I am wanting to put in a flow sensor system that if flow stops it shuts computer down. I also would like to have a temp monitor system so I can see coolant temps, was thinking One on the out flow from blocks on its way to the res, and one on the out flow on rad to the block so I can see how cool the coolant is before blocks and then how hot it gets after. I would need 2 of this since I am running a loop for my CPU and a loop for my Vcards.

Here is what I was looking at as far as sensors:

Flow Sensor

and temp of Res

And temp after rad

Just not sure what to tie this kind of stuff into to read it and also to turn off the computer if temps are too high or flow stops.

There are a few ways to do this, from the cheap and simple to the expensive and complicated.

The cheapest and simplest way is to connect that flow meter to your CPU fan header and set the BIOS to shut down if it flow stops.
The temp sensors can be re-wired to cheap XSPC digital temp sensors
http://www.xs-pc.com/products/accessories/lcd-display-sensors/lcd-temperature-sensor/
or now come ready made in stop plug and inline types
http://www.xs-pc.com/products/accessories/lcd-display-sensors/lcd-temperature-sensor-g14-plug-sensor/
http://www.xs-pc.com/products/accessories/lcd-display-sensors/lcd-temperature-sensor-v2-g14-inline-sensor/
As far as getting the PC to shut down based on water temps, that is more difficult because motherboards rarely have headers for external sensors.

The more expensive way is to use a fan controller like the Aquaero 5 or the new Lamptron CW611 pump and fan controller
Both devices will use and display the flow meter and water sensors and control fans based on those temps. The Aquaero goes a step further and can be wired into the PSU and can shut off power to the PC based on flow and temp sensors.

so is this flow sensor good? Bitspower G1/4 Thread Flow Sensor? then hook it into the MB? and could I do that with 2 one per loop and set bios up that if either stopped to shut the computer down? here is what else I was looking at for time.

Koolance Coolant Temperature Sensor, Brass, 10K Ohm one per loop on the out of the rad, and later adding another into the loop for the after block or in the res. Which is better before block or after to watch temp?

XSPC LCD Temperature Sensor V2 http://www.frozencpu.com/products/19754/tmp-72/XSPC_LCD_Temperature_Sensor_V2_-_White_Backlight_w_G14_Sensor_Plug.html setup on XSPC 5.25" Bay Temperature Sensor Dual Display Mount , and when I get the other 2 sensors add a second and wire where 1 of this is one loop before and after.

You will not see much of a difference between two sensors in the same loop no matter where they are if your flow rate is reasonable.

If you really wanted to display 4 temperatures a cheap fan controller that displays temps can use the same water sensors too. Though you can put those XSPC displays anywhere, not just in drive bays.

It seems some of the new Z87 boards now have external temp sensor headers, it could all be done with software with them. At least the new Sabertooth does

I got a Gigabyte OC Force so I am not sure if it does or now, but would be great if it did. not sure where to tell if it does or not.

Another question, I if I am wanting to y off my flow sensor to say run to a fan led screen on the frount of my pc and also run to the MB for the safety shut down, is there any kind of cable I could use? I mean the flow sensor is male, and the MB and LED screen is Male, so is there a splitter with all female on all 3 that way I can run it to both?

Why would the flow meter be male? It is designed to plug into motherboard headers isn't it? I would assume a simple 3 pin splitter cable would do what you want.

Edit: I see what you mean in the pictures now. I assume the cable it comes with has two female plugs. I guess because you want to do the opposite of what fan splitters normally do you need the opposite type of splitter cable, a male to dual female.

Yeah thats the problem, I cant find a 2 pin splitter like that, could I make one by cutting the end of and puttnig a female on the other side of a extention?

what you could do is put a normal 3 pin splitter on the flow meter
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1090/cab-05/3-pin_Y_Cable_Splitter.html?tl=g2c251s635
Then use the dual female cable that comes with the meter to connect to the CPU fan header
then you just need another cable of the same type ... they do exist but are a bit hard to find. You could just modify a normal extension.

Edit:
This would work
