So 4K TV's and such may be affordable in a few years, but the content will always be lagging far behind, and companies will want huge premiums for this, considering how terribly bad they overprice HD content now.

My service providers require you to also purchase channels or packages in SD when you purchase them in HD. Charging a premium for the HD content and making you buy the SD as well, so double charging on top. Then most of the content is at 720p and sometimes 1080i. I haven't even seen my TV run a program thats been in 1080p yet. But I don't check all the time, often, but not always.

So yea... don't see not being able to do 4K as a problem at all. Putting out realistic graphics in 1080p should be a higher priority, would make more sense for mass appeal and adoption as most people now have HDTV's, and the hardware required to pump out 4K console games would be prohibitively expensive, and for the reasons stated before, wouldn't really matter to most people in the market for a console.

I forgot, thanks for reminding me. These consoles are best used for watching TV.
Content being delivered from your TV provider is one thing, having a good GPU to power 1080p native games is another.

1080p in PC gaming is nearly outdated (many users have moved onto 1440p+ resolutions), but consoles are still lagging behind. I can't invest in something where watching TV in native 1080p trumps upscaled 1080p gaming.

Well I will say first off it only has 7gb usable and they aren't going to use all 7gb just for frame buffer for the gpu.

And second, yes, I suppose this maybe be more advanced tech than current PC systems IF the unified memory system actually is better than having separate pools for each cpu and gpu. But either way it is still far underpowered by today's standards even if the tech is new. You ARE NOT going to be able to run games at triple monitor resolutions or 4k with a console but a PC can already do that and have been for years.

7GB won't be all allocated for GPU but I'm willing to bet we'll see a solid 5-6GB for frame buffer alone. I don't see the system needing more than a gig or two if 1GB is already dedicated to the OS. I can't recall the last time a console has had the same type of memory and more capacity of frame buffer than the GPU market at the time of announcement or launch. Very impressive for a console aiming to launch at $400-500. That said I'm waiting for the slim line to release before I jump in.

true that unified mem has not been proven yet...but seems like there's a real push for that though.

But I am still on point to call out those that are claiming the PS4 is outdated. It's not, it's a new tech. It may not have the brute force/performance of your latest enthusiast-grade GPU but you'd be dead wrong to think it'll be the reason for software development stagnation seen in this gen. It's not meant to push eyefinity, or hell even 4K. But I doubt it'll have trouble running Full HD @60fps for years and years to come.

I think people just enjoy jumping on the console-hating bandwagon because they spent so much on their PC and feel like they're somehow entitled to always be the best. Personally, when I see what devs did with the PS3 and 360, and compare last gen's hardware to the huge jump in performance these new consoles will pack, I just have no clue how people can still think that console games won't look amazing. And, as was mentioned in the article, the really impressive games may come in a few years, once devs have had time to become really familiar with the architecture.

1080p in PC gaming is nearly outdated (many users have moved onto 1440p+ resolutions), but consoles are still lagging behind. I can't invest in something where watching TV in native 1080p trumps upscaled 1080p gaming.

I would say that not even half the users that lurk and post here have machines capable of running 1440p resolutions on max settings at above 60 fps. I know my rig would struggle with it, and I paid close to $1000 for it. And this is looking around a forum where PC hardware enthusiasts gather. 1080p is no where near obsolete. 1440p is not the norm.

Invest? These consoles are probably going to be cheaper than what it costs for a high end graphics card. As someone who has left console gaming behind completely, I still do not understand all the console bashing that goes on around here. Yes they run on inferior tech, but they are what drive the game industry. They are the reasons games are so popular, and why the tech continues to evolve. I can't stand the PC elitist attitude.

And let's not all forget, the current gen of consoles is running on incredibly old tech, and look what they are still able to pull of with it! Get ready for some incredible leaps in graphic fidelity on the PC side of things as well as consoles.

The ONLY thing that matters in determining that it is obsolete is sales.

What's the price difference between them again? $3000+ to get decent FPS on triple monitors? If they made a $3000 console I'm sure it would be able to do the same. If we were able to link 5 PS4's together into a single work unit then we would have something to behold. It would be pretty amazing if they were able to hook up multiple consoles into a single work unit and if done properly could push the life of consoles quite a bit further.
