Content being delivered from your TV provider is one thing, having a good GPU to power 1080p native games is another.

1080p in PC gaming is nearly outdated (many users have moved onto 1440p+ resolutions), but consoles are still lagging behind. I can't invest in something where watching TV in native 1080p trumps upscaled 1080p gaming.

I never meant they would be used for TV content, just giving an example of why 4K hardware (TV's) being reasonably priced in a few years is not a reason why 4K gaming for consoles would be a "requirement" for them not to be obsolete in a few years. OCN is a massive exception to what we would call "normal" for tech. And even 1440p isn't even the bare minimal on here. Many people are running on lower reso's than 1080p even. x786, 1440x900/1600x900, 1050 are still very common. The reason is that the average person buys their hardware and uses it till its either obsolete, or dies. I'm still on 1050, my parents on 900. Not uncommon. Now, 1200, 1440 and 1600, those are actually pretty rare when you look at the general hardware pool as a whole.

So anyway, getting better graphics to work with hardware people actually use is my point. There is no need to design your product to work with hardware 99% or so of your customers won't be using till you've replaced said product. It would be adding costs that are not needed, making profits non-existant and hardware costs to consumers restrictively high. That would be one heck of a flop. Instead, design for 1080p, a resolution a lot of HDTV's don't even support right now (not 1080p at least, theres still a lot of 32" and under TV's selling with 1080i/720p max reso's)

And this is looking around a forum where PC hardware enthusiasts gather. 1080p is no where near obsolete. 1440p is not the norm.

Invest? These consoles are probably going to be cheaper than what it costs for a high end graphics card. As someone who has left console gaming behind completely, I still do not understand all the console bashing that goes on around here. Yes they run on inferior tech, but they are what drive the game industry. They are the reasons games are so popular, and why the tech continues to evolve. I can't stand the PC elitist attitude.

And let's not all forget, the current gen of consoles is running on incredibly old tech, and look what they are still able to pull of with it! Get ready for some incredible leaps in graphic fidelity on the PC side of things as well as consoles.

It would be pretty amazing if they were able to hook up multiple consoles into a single work unit and if done properly could push the life of consoles quite a bit further.

You could easily run triple monitors with a modest $1500 hardware setup. Plus you get a PC along with it instead of a completely locked down console. You can game, surf the web, watch videos, listen to music, + much more with one purchase.

So while it may cost more you get much more for your money. Plus you have tons of options but with a console you are completely locked down to what MS or Sony think is best for you. You can upgrade to the latest and greatest or just use what you have for awhile I mean heck my 8800gt that's like 6 years old can still play everything I've thrown at it. There isn't one thing a console can do that my PC can't (besides play the 1 or 2 games that are "exclusive" which btw PC has plenty of those as well that you can't play on a console).

The only good thing about new consoles is that PC games should get better since they are no longer limited by consoles that have ridiculously low amounts of ram.

"Obsolete" doesn't apply to consoles in the same way that it does to other electronics.

Consoles have a predetermined life-span. The developers are "forced" to get the most out the the hardware and that's a good thing.

Obsolete is a relative term anyway. People throw away perfectly functioning devices every single day because that's what they're told to do...

Look at my sig... my rig is no way, shape or form obsolete. BF3 runs smooth as butter. smile.gif

I disagree. 1366x768 resolution is still a standard for laptops, including some 17" ones as well...
If the PS4 is going to be obsolete in a few years than the Xbox One will be obsolete in one year, seeing as it has 50% less shaders.

"“The console also tends to have higher performance than would be expected by the cost due to a lightweight operating system and the fact that developers enjoy many years to study the specific architecture."

This baloney, they have a lower cost b/c Microsoft and Sony sell at a loss to get a high market share as they make their real money on the game licensing and now days advertising and Xbox Live.

Personally, when I see what devs did with the PS3 and 360, and compare last gen's hardware to the huge jump in performance these new consoles will pack, I just have no clue how people can still think that console games won't look amazing. And, as was mentioned in the article, the really impressive games may come in a few years, once devs have had time to become really familiar with the architecture.

Totally agree with you

I think people are mad their crossfired 7950s is stuttering mess and the incoming fix will be game-by-game basis or how the overpriced Titan sales will be cannibalized by the 780...so they need to bring out the inner bully and put down console gamers. Ya kno...much like how console gamers pity the mobile gamers.

It's absolutely pathetic to look down another branch of gamers and gives the PC community a terrible image...but hey what am I supposed to expect from the comments in the OCN News Section? It's honestly worse than Youtube sometimes.

Consoles drive the market now and if these new specs aren't what it is we'll be stuck with games coded for DX9 and 256MB frame buffers for another 7 years.

People have no faith if they think 1080p isn't going to be the standard for next consoles. Sure we may see some upscaling, from like 900p or some custom res. But I don't think we will ever come back to 720p or below.

In the fps territory, that's another story. Some games will be updated @ 60fps, but as time progresses, devs would prioritize looks over smoothness, so that means a 30fps target.

I bet 1440/1600p will never become a standard, I think we'll jump to 4K instead.
