[TPU] ASUS unveil 39inch 4K VA monitor - Page 19

We know the gtx Titan can do 4k just like the ps4 will be able to but comes back to will it be able to do 60hz.
Yep. If not, nvidia has some 'splainin to do.

Hopefully it can just be a firmware or driver update.

The problem is with the monitor requiring MST or the problem is with Nvidia not supporting 2 monitor surround.
I would say the first makes more sense.

I hope it can. I'm over seeing bottle necks with stuff like this. It reminds me of melbournes roads. They upgrade them and by the time they finish they need to upgrade again. So they are always upgrading instead of building one big 10 lane freeway.

But I guess this happens a lot with technology whether its short sightedness from the manufacturer or just plain drip feeding, milking and gouging the consumers. The monitor should be 60hz capable with dp1.2. But we may have to wait till the nvidia 8xx series for 4k 60hz with a single dp1.2

I remember the plasmas when they first came out. Cheapest one at my local store was 16k. Lol they never had hdmi! What the???

Best to wait and see with this one. Let someone else try it.

I would say the pixelclock issue is definitely something to be concerned about.

I do wonder why MST was used on the sharp in the first place.. Why couldn't it just do 60Hz over a single connection as a single monitor? Is it due to legacy hard-coded driver limits?

I know on linux it says my display port on my gtx 670 has a 960 Mhz limit pixel clock limit (vs the 480 Mhz limit of my macbook pro retina) as far as what the display port bandwidth allows for (vs 330 Mhz for HDMI 1.4). Here is a modeline for 3840x2160 @ 60Hz using cvt reduced timing:

Modeline "3840x2160" 533.00 3840 3888 3920 4000 2160 2163 2168 2222 +hsync -vsync

That is 533 Mhz so dp 1.2 (960 Mhz pixel clock limit) should definitely be able to drive it as a single monitor unless something in the DP specs require it be split up into multiple displays or something. I mean if there isnt something like that why would sharp do it that way?

Anyway I can already tell you it wont work on linux. I have already tried doing > 400 Mhz over display port and as soon as it goes over 400.00 Mhz (to 400.01 Mhz) it is unable to get the hardware constraints or something and fails. I would not be surprised if the windows drivers have problems with this as well. The workaround people use to get 120Hz on the catleaps may work too but if all the drivers are broken maybe that is why the display manufacturer's are doing this MST bull****. I really wonder why they used MST. I am very curious to see if the ASUS has to use MST as well for the 60Hz.

Nvidia is apparently acknowledging this and working on an update to allow two monitor surround in the R325 drivers to fix the issue. Until then I guess this monitor and all other 4K 60hz monitors are dead in the water for Nvidia.

How that helps this monitor I don't know, since we don't know if it has the ability to split itself down the middle and run off of two different inputs.

Dont even know why this is an issue when you are able to overclock the pixel clock on a GTX Titan. Shouldn't that mean you'd able to run 3840x2160 at 60hz with a single display port connector and not need two monitor surround even if Nvida had put a limit on it? Wasn't that the point of including such a feature. So you could overclock 1440P 120hz screens etc?

Yes the issue is not 4K, it's 4K at 60 Hz. Both companies will require to use Eyefinity or Surround mode which is fail IMO. Way more problems than running single monitor.

As thestashe said, the pixel clock should not be the limiting factor in achieving 60 fps. If the display port can sustain that bandwidth, 4k at 60 bz, I don't see why you can't just specify it as an "overclocked" frequency.
I think the fastest card nvidia makes should not be incapable of meeting the fastest standard of the fastest port on the back of the thing.

If they don't resolve the 4k problem, I am going to be butthurt. If they do resolve it, even if it means 2 monitor surround, then thats fine. It will also give me an excuse to buy a second titan and start running windows 8. Only reason I am not on 8 right now is because multiple monitors in surround basically sucks with that OS.

For 4k @ 60Hz with Nvidia GPU's

Basically Nvidia's cards can not push a pixel clock of more than 400mhz per connection.

So the ASUS 4K monitor will require 2 connections with any NVIDIA gpu once they release the 325.XX drivers.

*This is still assuming that the ASUS 4k monitor will work with 2x1 surround.
