Let me quote what I was saying in that other 4K display news thread.
As far as GFX card power needed to run such resolutions, I have done that with few different combinations of hardware from the AMD size.
(1) 6770 + 5770 crossfire - sort of ok performance wise, limited by the amount of vRAM. 1 GB just does not quite cut it at that reso. 1 GB will get you as far as 3x 1080p screens pretty decent. At 4K you will hit the vRAM limit on regular basis, but not in everything you do. at 5x1 portrait (20% higher reso than 4K) you hit vRAM limit on regular basis on most games, need manual settings to make things playable. Strictly no AA.
(2) Single 6770 - same as above just half the performance. Inadequate for 4K, have to sacrifice some eye-candy, but the experience will be still more immerse than running at 1080p with "good" settings.
(3) 7870 with 2 GB of vRAM. Thats pretty decent. Hits sort of sweet spot for 4K gaming, you will hit rarely the vRAM limit if you go agressive with settings. Can do x2 AA in most games if you so desire. Few more modern games will drop you below 30 fps. But things like Source engine, Unreal 3 engine, most MMO's etc, run smooth. Will need some compromises for 60 fps tho.
(4) 7950 with 3 GB of vRAM - have yet to encounter the vRAM limit then again have neeb playign with it just for a week atm. Pretty good, a bit better overall than 7870, but you want to push it to 1 GHz which most of them should do fine as otherwise in vew places you will get less performance than 7870 running at 1 GHz surprisingly. If you want 60 fps will still need some comrpormises in some games.
So "needs 3 Titans for 4K" is a myth fueled by low reso benches ran by review sites where "everything ultra" means x16 or x32 AA and then they just extrapolate from there without running anything above 1440p themselves if even that.
Now if you consider a single 7870 an enormous GPU power or not is matter of opinion ofc. 2 TFlops is a lot.
Please note that I have not tried BF3, Crysis 3, etc - but the most demanding games on which i have based that opinion have been things like Crysis 1 and 2, Metro 2033, Planetside 2 at 5400x1920 reso (20% higher than 4K reso). Also, I must confess that I can live fps under 60, for me 40 fps is already pretty good.
Edit: Couple of snapshots of the display setups as well on which the above statements are based
The blue windows login screen is btw 2560x1600 - apparently microsoft did not think anyone will ever see it at any higher resolution than that.Edited by Carniflex - 6/13/13 at 12:44pm
