Is this safe for an unlocked 6950 (overclocking)?

Thread Starter

Trying to overclock an unlocked 6950 (twin frozr 3) so far i have been playing games stable at 980/1380 at 1.31 volts and it heats up to 77-80c (with a low rpm fan profile). Am i pushing it too much? Should i push for 1ghz? Is it really safe to even run this thing at 1.31 volts in the first place? I sort of want to push further but i am not sure whether the card will survive rolleyes.gif

Aaaaand before you ask, this card won't clock with low voltages, tried it with no success.

I would say its ok, but I wouldn't push that much voltage for that overclock ...

Granted different card but stock is 960/1250 @ 1.188 volts

Oh well, wish i had a 7950/70. I can't upgrade just yet tho, maybe when the 8k series launch. So i am stuck till i can with an unlocked 6950 (which is more than enough for most games i play since i am gaming in 1080p).

I actually wish I'd gone for a 7870 2 gig instead of the 7950. BUT if you need more performance overclock that beast to the max. You are using gputool to find your max stable core and then your max stable memory right?

The 7950 is a brute but I only play SC2 and LoL and steam games so overkill.

I thought my card was a bad clocker, but anything over 1100 core seems to be good

Thanks, i'll give GPUtool a go and see what's up.

Edit:

Max temp in GPUtool was 79c which should be good enough for air. I guess i'll keep this setting for now and try out different clocks and voltages later.

gputool load is 70% or less in new gen... use OCCT as artifact tester thumb.gif
post #7 of 11
I disagree. I can pass OCCT at higher core than gputool, and my gputool load is 99%

using a HD 7870 at gpu tool load is 70% even if you are at stock

What cpu is that with ? Regardless just so long as he stresses the core to test for stability doesn't matter how.
