HardOCP has said that heat isn't the deciding factor for how high these chips go, its the onboard VRM. Which means its a lottery sorta-thing.

If I am correct, even with a great water loop, you would be limited by what the VRM of YOUR SPECIFIC CHIP can do stably.

Link por favor? I was predicting this a year ago, because I figured a) even 90% efficiency on the regulator is still going to be dumping heat under the IHS and b) if the regulator design isn't that good then the OC won't be that good and no mobo will fix it.

Overall you will find most CPUs capable of reaching 44x to 45x with varying levels of voltage.

I can't remember where I heard it was the onboard VRM being unsteady.

They go on in the article to say "Its all about the cooling". It is unclear to me whether they argue anything is possible with the right cooling, or agree that every chip has its max.

finally a thread I can hijack that is on topic..

assuming same L3 cache model, is there any reason to go to haswell, or ivy, from sandy?

take my sig, would I see any real performance gains from ivy? haswell? if ive got this right, they are both almost identical, memory controllers are almost identical across all 3, and my sandy is likely to OC how much higher? .3? .5?

so like, whats better, my sandy @ 5GHz or my new haswell @ 4.5?

again assuming same L3 cache models. I realise a 2600K/3770k/4770k is an upgrade for me, but is a 3570k/4670k?

is a 2600K >> 3770k/4770k an upgrade?

ignoring costs and wanting performance, without looking at lga2011 cause we know the story there, whats my best upgrade? I don't need pcie3.0 yet, my cards are all 2.0. I do need extra processing power, for work not gaming, and really fast ram.

right now im strongly considering getting a 2600k if I don't go to 2011. im not particularly interested in delidding, and I can find one for $200 instead of $330 for new haswell.

if I stay on z77 ill be getting the asus z77 WS for 3way sli.

*edit, I say ignoring costs not cause im rich, but because obviously if cost is a factor is best to go with used sandy, 40% less cost, 90% of the performance. (100%?)

3770k to 4770k is a total waste of money IMO.

A 6 core cell console CPU run at 1.5-2.5ghz is nowhere comparable to a true quad-core CPU like an i5 at 3.5-5ghz.

This is a stupid question OP. Sell your Ivy for basically market rate, as it goes for, as all computer components keep their value very well, and buy Haswell. The only cost is the time it takes to wrap up your ivy in a shipping container, some ebay fees (if that), and installation of haswell. There is absolutely no reason not to upgrade every single time a new chip comes out as long as you can buy it slightly below market value, like at microcenter.

Unless you have a 5GHz Ivy and the risk isn't worth getting a worse performing haswell binned at 4.5. Or whatever they bin at.

I can't remember where I heard it was the onboard VRM being unsteady.

They go on in the article to say "Its all about the cooling". It is unclear to me whether they argue anything is possible with the right cooling, or agree that every chip has its max.

That part is make or break for me. My cooling system (direct die + chilled water) I can go up to 1.7V or higher and not thermal throttle. If Haswell will overclock to 5 ghz at 80C 1.5V then I'm down for an upgrade. Need to see someone do a review where the use custom water and not the cheap pre-assembled junk.
