5 GHz doesn't sound like it will happen at all on haswell....

Well, falling back on the unstable VRM news, not even DICE will help you if you didn't get an intel-hand-picked CPU. Because the unstable VRMs will just become even less stable with all the voltage/heat running through them. We will need to wait a few days to confirm this though, as I can't find my source and there haven't been many (if any) chip-lottery DICE runs.

Haswell is better than Sandy. But I'd consider it completely equal to Ivy if you do extreme OCing.

Ivy will overclock higher than Sandy AND beats it ~10% clock for clock. Haswell overclocks lower than Ivy but beats it ~7% clock for clock.

I'm just going to call best buy until they price match me for MCs 3770k price. Sadly my first attempt was shut down due to the fact that the closest MC is 100 Miles away >.<</div>

all i need is to see some over clocking results from some members even if a good % could get 4.6 out of haswell i might as well consider getting one

my 3770k is a bad chip anyway and 4.5 GHz is about max i will be pushing it considering i can't get my hands on CLU....

so ty for reply, are u saying if I delid an ivy I might be able to do 5.0 on AIO water? I can do it with my 2500K, if I can do either ivy K chip to 5.0 with an AIO water without delidding, or if delidding is really safe, then ill be looking at that.

Are you smoking crack? Ivy does in no way OC higher than sandy, not sure about LN2 but definitely not on WC or air.

With your mobo problem and the fact that haswell is better I would sell off your current equipment and upgrade.

5ghz would equal 5.5ghz from Ivy and even more for Sandy.

How, with IVY-E, it'll have BIGGER surface for heat dissipation, so maybe it'll clock super high..

Good news for x79 owners, But still dellidded haswell would still probably be better in games.

It has nothing to do with heat dissipation but with the gap inbetween the die and IHS.

Why would you recommend delid if you think it runs hot b/c of surface area? If it were true it ran hot only b/c of the surface area delid would not help really. Its the gap and that's why delid helps so much for most cpus.

It definitely makes a big difference. There are already results that are just as promising as Ivy is delidding.

If I am correct, even with a great water loop, you would be limited by what the VRM of YOUR SPECIFIC CHIP can do stably.

The heat can be handled with delid. The VRM's don't put that much heat into the chip.

Delidding with this method http://www.overclock.net/t/1376206/how-to-delid-your-ivy-bridge-cpu-with-out-a-razor-blade/0_100 is much easier and almost full proof way of delidding cpu.

Haswell is superior. No discussion there. Once oced if not delidded Sandy MIGHT win only b/c it doesn't have the gap issue as Sandy still plays the oc lottery and Haswell is on average 11 to 15% better than Sandy. So a 4ghz Haswell would match a 4.6 ghz Sandy and a 5ghz Haswell would match a 5.75ghz Sandy.

Are you full of ad hominems and childish insults towards fellow forum members?

Ivy DOES overclock better than Sandy. There's just a big asterisk* to it, in that you either need to delid or use water. Or basically both, really. Ivy can handle 1.6v 24/7 just fine provided temps stay under ~90C, while reports of Sandy degrading or dying on just 1.4v+ was widespread. While both Sandy and Ivy overclocked similarly, ie same X clock at Y voltage, the difference is that a delidded Ivy can stay cooler than Sandy, which practically means it can hit higher voltages and thus higher overclocks. Furthermore, it meant more Ivies could hit higher overclocks in general as you could push higher voltage, safer, through Ivy than Sandy. A 1.5v Ivy is going to overclock better than a 1.4v Sandy that's comparably binned, plain and simple... you just need to delid to access the true power of the 22nm process and how cool it runs compared to 32nm.

With Haswell being 22nm, I'm going to wait until we have people who delid, using high end air/water, telling us their overclock results on high voltages who are willing to actually use the chip and use temps as a limiting factor. No one has pushed Haswell to 1.4-1.6v yet, I wouldn't be surprised that 5ghz was very easy on haswell after delidding.

Remember, all the terrible review sites said Ivy could only overclock to 4.4-4.7ghz too, that was because they didn't delid.

Remember, all the terrible review sites said Ivy could only overclock to 4.4-4.7ghz too, that was because they didn't delid.

ok so I want a delidded ivy? or a 2600K? or keep my 2500k? or.. get a haswell and delid pending results from haswellers (5 days right? ish?)

I don't predict Haswell will have as drastic of improvement with delidding as Ivy Bridge. From the IHS being redesigned, it seems Intel realized there was an issue and corrected it. Much thinner IHS sealant = much more contact pressure on the die.

Go with Ivy, and delid it.

And don't run it at 1.6V. I have to replace mine because I ran it for a month (or 2) at that high of voltage and it's degraded to the point where 4.9 @ 1.55V is unstable.

  • so i was thinking 3770k to 4770k, i take it haswell clocks worse and runs hotter ?! but clock for clock is 10% faster ?
