CPU dumb question....

Note: if you don't want to read a dumb question then please stop reading now.

I have no in depth idea regarding intel's third generation and fourth generation CPUs. But I've read they have their own built in gpu.

You can see my specs in the bottom and it's a more than four year old desktop computer. It still works fine but I don't wan't to come to a point where I can no longer get considerable money from selling it second hand. So I want to just sell it now and add funds to get a better platform.

Problem: I don't have that much funds to add either!

So again, I will be doing my upgrade in parts. I'll sell the cpu, motherboard and ram, and get money to buy a decent motherboard and then save up funds to buy processor and ram!

The question:

  1. Since the new Intel CPUs have both CPU and GPU in them... is it now possible to work with just motherboard , cpu and ram and no dedicated video card for the meantime?
  2. Is it worth doing it this way or should I just save all the money until I can buy all components in one go?
  3. I have a laptop (series 5 np500p4c samsung) that I am currently using and i think it also has a CPU-GPU processor and I'd really like to be able to beat the performance with a desktop.

Shogarran, we're going to hit discount season, Black friday very soon.. I wouldn't wait that long just to save $50 but since budget is an issue here, yea, Discount soon..

And to the Neh sayers, Even if haswell doesn't go on sale,, 3770 and 3570 certainly will.. and haswell doesn't really offer much ONTOP of that, if base build of ivybridge is $75-150 cheaper, which MIGHT happen, then Shogarran would be better served by IVY. smile.gif

I wont be able to take advantage of Black Friday... I live in the Phillippines. But black friday or not, Ivy bridge prices will go down once Haswell reaches our shores. Not by a lot but it will still be significant.

First of all I would like to know if I can really make a system work with just CPU-Mobo-Ram. Because if this does work, then I'll opt to buy a mid range Haswell with better internal graphics rather than an IVY. And then I have time to save up money until the mainstream 7xx series of nvidia comes out. (probably 750 would be a good choice for me). The reason why I like this is that this set up still beats my laptop....which is technically working with the same components... just CPU-Mobo-Ram.
