"Beginners guide" to server OS

Thread Starter
Hello!

I've built recently a little home server (you can check it on my sign), to mainly serve as data repository and streaming media to my other devices, but i'm a complete newb on server OS, server management and server theory in general and honestly i don't know how and where to start. Any of you know about some kind of "beginners guide" to server OS (Win or Linux).

I've been looking in google for it but i can't find anything straightforward. The ones that i found are very technical and i lack the theory.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance! thumb.gif

EDIT: I'll be reading this in first place, seems a good place to get started.

I new to server 2012 too , so i use technet. You have information about all the stuff you can do with server 2012. There is a description of every roles your server can take. Each roles then have it own step by step guide how to implement it . If you get a error, you can also found the solution directly by using the error code.

I hope this is what you were looking for thumb.gif

Are you looking to gain experience in terms of furthering your career or just looking for some advice on how to maintain your home server?

Looking to gain experience and learn about the server world. I've built this little server to have something apart from my desktop to experiment with and learn smile.gif

install Virtualbox on your desktop (if you don't already know what that is, it allows you to run virtual machines - which means you can install whole OSs on your desktop inside a container that's seperate from your host OS and run them as if you were playing a Sega Genesis emulator).

Once you have virtual box installed, then play around with installing Debian and/or CentOS. Install Apache, MySQL, PHP (aka LAMP). This will get you familiar with how to set up a server, and as it's inside a virtual machine it's completely safe.
