Upgrading to GTX 780 need advice

Hi there!

I am upgrading my graphics card from GTX 465 to GTX 780. Since the new card is PCI-E 3.0 I was wondering if I have to upgrade my motherboard as well which supports only PCI-E 2.0.

Here's my motherboard / CPU details.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7 v2 http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3416#sp

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T 3.2GHz

I have got 8GB RAM already that should not be a problem but wondering about motherboard and CPU specially.

Thanks smile.gif

GTX 780 is backwards compatible with pci-E 2.0.

Also, the difference from pci-E 2.0 to 3.0 is about a 1% difference in performance.

Another thing to note is that the cpu is the factor of supporting pci-E 3.0, not the mobo.

You'll be ok running a GTX 780 with your 1090T.

I'm no expert on amd CPU's so I can't comment on that.

But, if I'm not mistaken GPU's can't fully utilize PCI-E 3.0. Back when the GTX 680 was released it didn't support it. But, later when it did the boost in performance was none existent. Maybe, that's changed but that's how I'm aware of it. If you have the funds to upgrade the motherboard I would do so if you decide you want to sli. As I see the board supports crossfire but, not sli.

Just got my GTX 780 today and it runs my 2560x1440 very well. You won't be disappointed with the card itself. thumb.gif

Thanks for suggestions. I would be going for motherboard and CPU upgrades later because of funds. Good to know my current rig won't have problem running the new card biggrin.gif
