HD 7850 little bit of artifact

Thread Starter
Got a powercolour HD 7850 which is fine for gaming, but gives a few small squares on screen when GPU computing like BOINC.

It's just a few little squares on an area about 3 inches x 1 inch which disappear again when I do anything.

Temps 68C, fan 44%, load 99%

The VRAMS don't have heatsinks - are they getting too warm ?

I recommend checking those temps, as well as VRM temps. I recently killed my 560 ti due to overheating VRMS, the room filled with a toasty smell, and a closer look at the PCB showed the brown VRMS that had melted. biggrin.gif B4 that I also was suffering from some strange BSODs along with artifacting. If your 7850 however is not running stock speeds or is overclocked in any shape way or form, set it back to default settings. It most likely is an unstable overclock. IF it is at default clocks, you can try upping the voltage, some factory OCs may fail, or you may have gotten a bad card.

Hi thanks ThriftyPo - sorry to hear about your toasty burn out, i can imagine seeing expensive kit go up in smoke is not something I would like very much, myself, in fact I would be upset. Possibly with cursing, desk banging, and perhaps even tears. Something like this thinking.gifheadscratch.gifdoh.gifmad.gifmadsmiley.pngfrown.gifsad-smiley-002.gif

Are you running an overclock? If so, then put it back to stock settings.

If the overclock isn't the issue, then my best guess is that the VRM's are overheating. To help cool them down, if your case has a slot for a side panel fan, then install one there. If not, then what i found to work is to zip tie a fan to the hard drive cages and have the fan blowing air towards the graphics card. Give that a shot and see how it goes thumb.gif

TBH I really had no feelings when it failed. lol. The only thing that was going through my mind was whether or not I had a spare graphics card to replace the broken GPU. biggrin.gif I mean I did have this 560 ti for quite some time, around 2 years almost, and I had overclocked it to the highest possible clock I could get (1ghz on core). Its deff seen better days, I mean I removed the IHS, had the "mod" installed, cooling it with the antec 620 bare on the die. However, I did have a fan extension for the bracket, and did have some spot cooling on the VRMS, but no heatsinks. I guess I saw it coming, especially with all the risks I've taken with the card. Anyway, offtopic.gif
As for the 7850, if you have done all the steps such as cooling VRMs and things like that, and still having trouble with the artifacting, switch out the GPU with a spare or old one. If it still artifacts then it might be the computer, or the monitor, or even the software issue. If it isn't, then you might have a faulty 7850, and you should RMA it.

No i haven't done anything with the RAm chips, its stock cooling and they are bare so i wondered if they needed a bit of cooling help.
