SSD + 2 x WD Blacks in RAID 0. Is it possible? - Page 2

Option 1:
- Keep your SSD as a boot drive and install only the core apps. Follow THIS guide to make sure everything is setup correctly.
- Use the two WD HDs seperately, one as active data, the other as a backup drive that you backup data to.

Option 2:
- Keep your SSD as a boot drive and install only the core apps. Follow THIS guide to make sure everything is setup correctly.
- RAID0 the two WD HDs for data storage
- Buy another HD with a capacity equal the 2 RAID0 drives and use it as a backup drive for the RAID data

Those are the two setups I would do.

Its only a 60gb OCZ Vertex 2. I bought it a while ago and even shifting my files to the other hard drive its already full frown.gif I was maybe thinking of replacing bath and using the SSD in my media center because that's only got a 40gb anyway.

What do you think will be worth doing to get the most space and speed?

If you are willing to buy new drives, could you provide a budget for that? That has a lot of impact on overall capacity, speed, and redundancy of a storage setup.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, your 60GB shouldn't be that full. I would almost suggest a complete reinstall and following the guide I linked above for it. It should help to free up a good deal of space. Especially if you have hibernate turned on, system restore on, & page file still on your SSD. Of course, those three things you don't need a reinstall to resolve though. Could you check those for us and let us know if they are on?

RAID0 is only worth it if your need FAST access to data. if you follow the guide above which is how I have all my system's setup then I personally don't see the need. The other reason I'm no big RAID0 fan is that I am all about redundancy and data security which RAID0 has nothing to contribute to those and in fact is a detractor to them.

Its really hard to say what to do given the capacity issues you are having with your SSD. If we can figure out whats eating it up we can get a better idea of how to setup your storage.

I looked though space sniffer and it seems to be appdata more then anything. the appdata seems to get stored no matter what on the SSD which with a game like dirt 3 takes up a lot of space frown.gif

When you say appdata are you talking about the Program Files or the appdata withing C:\User\ACCOUNTNAME\appdata\local? If its the program files, then you can just backup your save games, and uninstall/reinstall to the other HDs. If they are installed through steam you can direct steam to install games on other drives as well. Thats how I have mine setup on my desktop.

EDIT: Do you have Hibernate, System Restore, and the Page file turned on?

Okay, go ahead and run the following command in an admin command prompt:

powercfg -h off

This will make sure that hibernation is turned off and will also delete the hiberfil.sys if it exists on the C drive. This should free up, if its there, approximately the same amount of space as you have RAM.

As for your System Restore, assuming Win7, go to your start menu and right click on 'Computer' then select 'Properties'. Once it brings up the basic information window go to 'System Protection' and select the 'System Protection' tab. On here you will be able to disable System Restore for your C Drive by unchecking it.

While you have The System Properties window up you can also go to the 'Advanced' tab and then click on 'Settings' under 'Performance'. This will bring up a window called Performance Options where you have a button that says 'Change'. Click on 'Change' and then select 'No Paging File' and apply and exit.

Turning these features off will reduce some of the Windows's usage of your SSD by removing old restore points, removing the page file which is not needed on SSDs, and removing the hibernation file. If you aren't comfortable with disabling System Restore, just remove all the old restore points and keep the last couple. Once this is done please give us an update on how much space you have.
