Plus, like he said, get an external that has a greater capacity than your RAID array so you can always backup your data.

Yea are the WD Blacks n e good for raid? because that would be the drive i would be looking at getting because i here there reliable. Also noobish question but i got a bit confused lol The WD Blacks, are they the same as the WD Caviar Blacks? (you may face palm now tongue.gif).

Sorry for the delayed response.

Western Digital black drives are good for RAID. Short of buying an enterprise class drive they are one of the best on the market.

AS for the naming convention, Western Digital used to use the name Caviar on all of their drives. It is still going to be the same drive though you may want to just verify the specs of the drive to make sure whatever vendor you go through doesn't have some of the older WD Drives still.

you can use Blue, Black and Red WD drives in RAID (again, I would only do a mirror RAID1 with mechanical drives, wouldn't ever risk RAID0 on spinners). avoid the WD Green line a plague, they are total crap, not even good for backups usually ...

RAID1+0 would be a better solution. RAID1 is ok for redundancy but is expensive, you only get use of 1 drive capacity. Might as well buy a third HDD and have redundancy and speed.
Otherwise just use the drive non raid and make backups on a regular schedule.

yup, but I had in mind someone having small budget limited to 2 hard drives only wink.gif that gives protection against 1 or 2 (depending on luck of draw which side of mirror the drives were assigned to) drive failures ... 4 drives is expensive though.

then I'd still go with RAID5 and 3 drives, this still gives protection against a single drive failure and much more usable space at a slight performance cost.
Still ... RAID doesn't protect against file corruption, accidental deletion or virus infections that can't get reversed and backups are in order either way wink.gif

I used to run bootable mirror and storage mirror on home desktop in past, but eventually upgraded drives for a bootable SSD RAID0 (god I love performance!) and a single storage drive, and a bigger (slow) external drive for backups of both (boot and storage partitions), I think I like it this way most for home desktops. for servers though ... one can't be careful enough and I go crazy with various mirrors (usually raid1 or 1+0 for bootable partition and 5+0 for storage).

RAID1 is only useful so long as the data stays intact and you don't accidently delete part of it. Once you do this RAID1 is a hindrance as its gone from both drives and you have half the capacity with no speed gain. The only useful thing about RAID1 is that you have redundancy in that 1 drive can fail and you still have your active set of data. The key there is that its the active set, not a backup set. Any RAID1 setup will need either another internal drive or external drive to use for backups. Ideally backups are external so they can be moved in case of fire, flood, bears with lasers attacking, or whatever else may happen that you would need to run and still have your data.

EDIT:
Sorry, had my reply sitting a long time tongue.gif

Agree with this completely. Redundancy always makes for a better solution.

Your current Home setup I agree with and would advocate so long as you keep your backups consistent. Now given the OPs current setup I would say optimization of the current config and then deciding on another new drive to install and work with may be best.

Speaking of optimization, did you ever run the powercfg -h off from the C Drive in command prompt?

sorry, I edited the post above in meantime before you replied. I totally agree with a need for backups on mirror smile.gif
on servers I use DAT or LTO tapedrives for OS partitions and NAS (nightly xcopy) for storage partitions, for home comps obviously that implies using another hard drive, be it external USB/esata/thunderbolt or NAS or whatever wink.gif

sorry for messy replies, I gotta run, (at work now LOL)

RAID1 is actually slower than no raid at all, just so you know

RAID1 can actually provide up to 2x read speed but is limited to the write speed of a single drive. RAID10 is always a better optio, tho.
