Haswell i7 4770k - Rebuild - Pics , Benchmarks & more !!

Thread Starter
Hey fellow Overclockers, i thought id start a new thread just to keep all things simple. In a previous thread i asked if a Haswell setup was a more worth while upgrade than just a GTX780 in my FX build.

Well my itch for upgrade got the better of me and i decided to get a i7 4770k and some other new kit to see if i can get better overall performance over my previous FX8350 build. So its's kind out with the not so old and in with the newest of new tongue.gif

The focus of this thread is to share with you my experience going from a FX8350 build to a i7 4770k build, i will include pics ( as best i can , my photography sucks ), and along my new Intel journey ( not my 1st mind you ) i will test different benchmarks/ games to see how well it performs. I will also include temperatures as this is a rather big issue around Haswell. I will try to answer as many questions as i can but i am a busy father of four so it is time allowing of course. Hopefully along the way i can help answer some questions regarding performance and temps, but as far as overclocking im not looking to push this cpu far if at all ( maybe 4.2Ghz ).

So here is what i am currently using.....

AMD FX8350 @ 4.5Ghz Daily 1.42v
Asus Sabertooth 990FX Rev 1.0
Kingston Hyper X Genesis 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 @ 1.65v
H100 Corsair 4 x 120mm fans push/pull

Here are the new organ donors tongue.gif

Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H Motherboard
Intel i7 4770K @ 3.50Ghz Turbo 3.90Ghz
Kingston Hyper X 2133Mhz @ 1.65v 8Gb kit
Corsair H110 - 280mm Radiator * might use just 2 x 140mm or 4 x140mm PP

And now of course for some quick pics for your viewing pleasure

The Memory biggrin.gif Two of these black beauty's

The all important i7 4770k drool.gif

The stock cooler which i won't be using, with interesting thermal application thinking.gif

The heart & lungs of the operation biggrin.gif

And of course last but no means least............the cooling !! This thing is HUGE to me * Pepsi can measurement scaling ftw*

So hopefully late tonight i should have time to strip down my old build and install the new kit and at least get as far as installing Win7. Im going to build from scratch taking all the kit out , cleaning, then reinstalling new kit with cable management in mind.

My FX8350 has served me very very well for the price i paid, and i had no regrets buying it, it has given me months of PC pleasure. I would ask that any comments in this thread be kept without prejudice to either camp ( Intel V AMD ). So please refrain from flame wars, trolling or just being out right rude, we all love tech here and we all like to help each other out regardless of what hardware choices we make so lets keep the OCN spirit going thumb.gif

As i said before i will try to help answer any questions in regard to how Haswell runs( YES including Temps), this is so any of you looking to upgrade can get some idea whether it is worth your hard earned cash.

I will update again asap biggrin.gif

Thanks i think i am going to enjoy this little beast biggrin.gif

Now onto some updates biggrin.gif . So late late last night i finished installing Win7 and managed to do a few tests and i was rather surprised. Now firstly i must say i have not adjusted anything or optimised the system for benchmarking whatsoever, so results further down are from a fresh install of win 7 without updates or adjustments just straight up stock. But before all that jazz a few pics of the rebuild which took about 3-4 hours smile.gif

CPU & Ram ready to go thumb.gif

After removing the old FX kit it's time for new Transplant tongue.gif

Not best cable management but it will do for now.

Old rad v new rad.

Hmm new shiny things.....

New 280mm rad installed, took a few moments to adjust back to intel fittings but i got it soon enough tongue.gif

It LIVES IT LIVVVVVVEEEEESSSSSSSSSS, what have i created arghhhhhhhhh tongue.gif

Ok so not the most exciting of rebuilds i admit, and yes my photography skills are certainly left wanting ha ha. Now lets move onto some quick test results ( and yes those all important temps ).

So a single run of all benchmarks in Cinebench 64Bit.........No adjustments just open and run thumb.gif

Now for a rerun of Multithreaded test.....@ Stock

wPrime 32M &1024M single run @ Stock

A quick run with AIDA 64 Memory benchmark....... it was top of nearly every list in each individual test !! But here's the whole picture, cpu @ stock Ram @ 2133Mhz

And finally ( for now at least ) 3DMark11 biggrin.gif

Overall im very impressed with the system, and i have still lots to do before i even think about overclocking it, but initial results are certainly looking good. Compared to my FX some results i get at stock i would have had to overclock to 5Ghz+ to get on my FX8350, of course this is partly to be expected, but nonetheless im still picking my face up off the floor drool.gif

I will be overclocking in the near future ( After re installing everything again ), once i figure out how overclocking works on Intel lol. But first i must get everything sorted software wise, then i can get on with some tinkering.

Now as far as temps are concerned........ running with this Corsair H110 2 x 140mm fans on PWM here is what im getting so far....

Room Ambient 15-21C

Idle = 23c -27c

Load = 45-53c

MAX = 55c ( so far )

CPU Vcore = Idle - 0.15v Load = 1.17v

So far so good, looks like i have some room to OC, but all in good time. Im off for now to go install everything back on and read up on how to OC this lil beast. Peace out guys update soon thumb.gif

Looking good except, you have an H110. You should set your OC goals higher than 4.2GHz, there is nothing to be afraid of wink.gif

TBH overclocking on Intel is now a total mystery to me, i will be giving it a go of course but im gonna have to research it. I did give it a little go earlier upto 4.3Ghz but i really need to get to grips with this new BIOS ha ha.

I did set a auto OC profile in the BIOS @ 4.30Ghz, but it pushed voltage upto 1.36v which im not sure if it's too high or not ?!? Despite this i did a few tests ( No throttling ) and the results were very nice. Temps went upto 72c but i do have it on low fan profile atm. So once i have read up on how to overclock Intel Ivy Bridge ( i figure it will be nigh the same way ) then i will pursue the overclocking side of things biggrin.gif

Be careful using Auto voltage with Haswell, there are some reports that the new adaptive VID/offset can cause undesirable voltage spikes and high voltages (1.36 sounds high for 4.3, for example).

Maybe get some dust filters for the radiator fans?  That old one was pretty clogged looking.

Nice looking build though - I've got a UD3H and a 4770K coming today myself.

Im going to be very careful with regards to voltages on this chip, though there is no option in Gigabyte BIOS for adaptive VID etc. It's gonna take me a while to get used to this BIOS, it is so different o the Asus BIOS's im used to.

My case is actually fully filtered lol, but that damn dust still finds a way ha ha. biggrin.gif

Btw the UD3H comes with a F3 BIOS (this version can not be downloaded), id advise flashing BIOS to F5 via USB stick before installing windows. Otherwise you will have to do a quick windows repair to correct the boot up. wink.gif

I'm also on a UD3H - flashed to F5 before I installed Windows (F5 changed a lot of the options menus).  Still trying to find my way around the BIOS also - really different than the Asus I had before.  So far all I've done is set a manual Vcore at 1.32V (1.33V under load), increased the analog and digital voltages by +0.025V (can't remember the name of the option) and set the VCCIN to 2.2V.  Seems stable at 4.4 @1.33V for now.

Strangely, setting the fixed voltage doesn't keep that voltage all the time - it still idles down to 0.75V at idle.

Yes the voltages will go down if you have power saving options enabled , which is only a good thing, plus it does not effect overclocking at all. I tested as far as 4.7Ghz but it did not like it at all, im sure with fine tuning it will do more but i was happy to settle on 4.6ghz biggrin.gif

Without throughly going over each setting i managed to get an overclock of 4.6Ghz, and with this i ran some common benchmarks to see the performance gains. Some of these tests were more GPU based and some were cpu based. Im sure with more fine tuning i can reach 4.7 to 4.8ghz + but im not looking to run it that fast daily nor do i want to kill a new investment ha ha. So without further a do here is some results...... thumb.gif

i7 4770k @ 4.60Ghz -- 1.36v -- 2133Mhz RAM Temps= Idle 27c Load 81c Max 83c

Nice lil Physics score i think thumb.gif

Extreme where possible.

Extreme Preset FTW !!

There is certainly more room for OC given max temp was 83c, but im a happy camper knowing what it can do if in the future if i want to OC. For now im running @ Stock with turbo @ 4.0ghz -- 1.16v Temps 23c - 58c.

Compared with my old FX8350 system this just blows it away, though i must admit i did love that system too biggrin.gif
