Deliding a 4770K (Haswell). Improving temperatures and maximizing overclockablity.

If you remember This Thread, I delid a 3770K processor and confirmed that Intel screwed it's loyal customers by crippling Ivy Bridge line of processors. This resulted in overclockers having to swap the "internal" thermal paste (the TIM between the CPU Die and the integrated heat spreader) to get the best out of those chips.

It looks like Intel completely ignored the overclocking community's outrage and decided to pull the exact same move with Haswell. I'll be investigating to see if that is in fact the case here.

I Ordered a 4770K and an Asus Gryphon board for this test. They got shipped today and I should have them within the next day or two. Stay tuned.

List of parts that I used for this test:

Asus Z87 Gryphon
Core i7 4770K
8 GB Corsair 1333 MHz (Dual Channel)
Antec Kuhler 920 (Push/Pull with stock fans at maximum RPM)
Corsair TX850
Cool Laboratory Liquid Pro + Xigmatek Freezing Point G4718

This is before deliding/paste swap:



And this is after:



Stress testing was done by Prime95 64-bit version 27.9 on custom settings with FFT length set to 32 (Run FFTs in-Place checked). Duration: 10 minutes. CPU voltage and frequency were set to 1.312 volts and 4.3 GHz respectively.

Before delid:

Average CPU Load temperature: 87.5
Ambient: 24.9

Delta: 62.6

After delid (Cool Laboratory Liquid Pro between Die and IHS):

Average CPU Load temperature: 69
Ambient: 24.6

Delta: 44.4

As you can see, With a "simple" thermal grease swap, the temperatures droped by an average of 18.2 C while using 1.312 volts.

Waiting for Ivy Bridge-E now. let's see if the trend continues.

Are you going to try your CPU die naked too? I heard Koolance made a custom bracket for their CPU waterblocks so it can make direct contact with the die rather than having the IHS and a 2nd layer of TIM in between. Pleas don't hold me responsible if you end up breaking your CPU, I was just asking, not recommending. Good luck with your results!

I would use a Vice. So much safer. Love my Temp after Deliding. They are actually lower then my Core i5 2500K. Got to love low 50s under normal load and low 60s in prime compare to 93C in prime i had before.

Maybe, maybe not. It's very likely that you'd kill either the chip or the board or even both if you're not careful. I've seen it happen plenty of times. I'll take that into consideration.

I tend to agree, but I've delid at least half a dozen Ivy Bridge chips by hand and never had one go wrong.

Looking forward to this, since my chip, tim, and new WC block (indigo extreme, which i wasnt think about it being a 1150, because it used the same coolant mounting holes as 1155, so might have to wait) will be here tomorrow and my MB and ram will be here Thursday.

Can you link it? And would it work with an EK block?

I've got some Cool Laboratory Liquid Pro, Xigmatek G4718, Phanteks PH-NDC, Prolimatech PK-1, XSPC K2, MX-4, and even some AS-5.

Liquid Pro will most likely yield the best results as we've seen with the Ivy Bridge so I'll test that first. Not sure if I'll bother with the rest but I'll have them ready just in case I decide to do more tests.
