I've just got a Z87 OC for a test bench I'm looking to set up to learn overclocking.
I picked up the lastest pentium G3258 chip as a cheap CPU to get started with and not be too worried if I melt it.
I needed to test boot the board quickly as it was an open box item/cheap with a short warranty. So I fitting the chip without thinking that the BIOS currently F7 might not be able to boot with this newer chip.
Well I can boot to BIOS and the chip seems to have been recognised correctly. I have an A6 Q code but am guessing that this is because I didn't have a graphics card fitted, or possibly because there was not boot drive either.

Sorry about all that pre-amble, my question it this I need to update the BIOS to F9 using QFlash as I have yet to buy an OS and I'm not sure I can do this safely with the haswell refresh chip fitted.
Has anyone successfully done this operation or would it be better if I purchase a cheap CPU say a G1820 celeron or G3220 pentium fit that and get the BIOS flashed.

Am I also assuming correctly that I can flash to just one of the BIO'sS and if things don't go well boot to the other and then repair the first.

I'm looking to set up a FreeNAS system as funds permit, so the cheap CPU will not go to waste.

many thanks to anyone who takes the tiime to reply.

I know this may be a bit late, however the code you have referenced relates to the motherboard not being able to pick up any drives connected. So yes, you should be able to flash the BIOS safely by either using QFlash (the tool built into the BIOS) or by using EFIflash (the tool provided by Gigabyte for use with DOS boot drives).

Hey, my Z87x-OC was having a lot of issues, so after it got caught on a boot loop and I began to run out of ideas I decided to press the Cbat button.
I however forgot to unplug the power cord, and of course it just doesn't boot anymore. I'm not that annoyed for the motherboard since the plan was to replace it anyway, but I'm afraid other component might have been damaged.
I won't get to test my hardware before a few days, maybe week, is there any risk some of it has fried too ?

Thanks in advance.

edit.

I got it working again, however I'm now back to my original issue.
I'll describe it the best I can, if someones think of something let me know smile.gif

After flashing the board to bios F7g I started having some issues (might or not be related), I couldn't get most usb ports to work and linux live cds weren't booting properly (to a few exceptions).
Flashed it back to f7 and since it just wait for input on the board's splash screen, then promptly reboots. Over and over again. Clear cmos doesn't change anything and the backup bios doesn't seems to react.

edit 2.

I've found where the problem lied, both of my drives are f*cked.
I have a 2Tb drive for data alongside my ssd, and wanted to check if my data was still intact. Turns out I can mount them on linux if I use a live cd (such as Caine or Deft) on another computer but if I try to boot a pc with either of them plugged in I'll get a kernel panic.
I've solved the issue of my pc getting stuck on splash screen by unplugging the ssd.
Whats puzzling me is that this didn't happen when I f*cked up with the cbat button but actually started happening when I flashed the bios back to F7, but what would be the reason ?
Also reverting back to previous bios version didn't solve any of the issues I originally tried to solve...

Have you tried using a newer version of the BIOS, such as F8 or F9c? I've been using F8 for a while now and it seems to be the most stable for me, so maybe it could help in your situation?

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4514#bios

In regards to the HDD/SSD drives have you tried performing a secure erase of the drive before trying to boot with it again?
I presume that you have also tried the drives in another PC as well?

@kfume the rma process was very slow but not entirely too painful and they do not offer cross shipping. (A 3-6 week process)

I have requested ANOTHER RMA for the board (will be my 4th board) which seems to be having issues utilizing my gpu and not reading channel a ddr. Honestly I HIGHLY doubt I'll even attempt to put this board back in my system, it had been hands down the worse product purchase I have ever made, especially considering I paid $399.49 for it in February and still have yet to have a working system because of this part.

I did try to upgrade the BIOS to F8, but Q-Flash complained about itself being out of date. I don't know what I'm supposed to do about it.
Also when I said the drives were causing issues, I meant in other PCs too. Whatever computer (be it Unix or Windows) will refuse to boot. When I let them (or either one of them) plugged in the pc with my (I guess) defective motherboard, it is causing said issue (that is, getting stuck on bios Gigabyte's splash screen). Tried to see what would happen in my classroom (two PCs sporting OpenBSD and Slackware) and it would cause kernel panics.

I've actually passed them on to a friend of mine to see if he'd get somewhere, so until I get some news I can't really do anything.

I don't know exactly what is a secure erase but I'm actually trying to keep what was onto the drives, so what I'm looking for is a way to get them to work again without getting rid of the data, although I guess that is not meant for this thread.

hallo..how to disable small noisy fan on heatsink in bios?
anyone with this board can you please go into control panel > hardware and sound > device manager and then in the top click on VIEW > Show hidden devices

and go to System Devices > PCI bus and show what driver you have installed.
For some reason on windows 7 my GPU is not using correct driver I think I am not geting good points in 3Dmark, but under Windows 10 it does a lot better.

I think I got the wrong PCI bus driver installed can someone please reply.

negative, ive been running F9 with my 4790 since day 1. Actually posting here to inquire if anyone with an OC force has ran both and can comment on the differences? F10 is labled as "enhanced devils canyon performance" under the details section so im curious for some more information.

Always seems to be slim pickings regarding specifics with bios updates frown.gif

anyone using an OC force have anything higher than 100mb FD in the "link speed" uefi settings? I have a fully compatible supported montage of hardware for gigabit networking yet my uefi displays 10 hd/fd and 100hd/fd and auto. No option for 1000 or 1gb fd/hd.

I reckon its working just fine on auto but I'm an anal SoB and dont like to use things on auto smile.gif It is literally the only two settings in my entire uefi that are stuck that way and are only such because im afraid to put them on 100FD and somehow limit or bottleneck my bandwidth lol.

So TLDR anyone seeing anything higher than 100mb full duplex in the uefi "link speed" setting?

Thanks for your time as per usual!
