gtx 460 port help

post #1 of 17
Thread Starter
so im about to finish my build with a 3570k at 4.5ghz and i picked up a gtx 460 for temporary use until i can get two 780's in sli.
anyways i just realised there is no regular hdmi port. only mini hdmi and dvi. im wondering if there is any difference between he two? sound doesn't matter as il have my speakers plugged into my motherboard anyways.
if hdmi is the way to go. should i get a mini hdmi to regulat hdmi adapter or cord?
if dvi is the way to go what cord should i get.
could you also maybe post a link to a mini hdmi to regular adapter/cord which ever ones is better. and maybe a link to a dvi cord if thats better than hdmi.

thanks so much! redface.gif

There's no difference other than audio.

HDMI = Audio + video
DVI= Only video

Some people claim one is superior to the other, but there isn't really a lot of data to support this.

Have fun!

Also, any DVI cable should do. No need to spend crazy money on one. It's one of the few things that might be cheaper in a random small shop since online the price of shipping has to be adjusted for.

E.g.: http://www.amazon.com/Ikross-High-Resolution-Gold-6ft/dp/B000O5TH14/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1370397296&sr=1-1&keywords=dvi+cord

Basically that ^

Though stuff like bandwidth also varies but for your uses it shouldn't matter.

Curious- In which situations would DVI bandwidth begin to become a big factor?

When running out of spec like trying to OC a connection and the fact that the current hdmi spec is limited to crappy 3D @ 30hz because of stupid rules and specs of the BD association. Not being able to do certain resolution through HDMI even if both the card and monitor support it as well, HDMI 2.0 is coming which will fix some stuff but yeah for 1080p uses it should be fine, going past that DVI and display port are proffered because they support the higher bandwidth needed.

I just realized he didn't say if was using 1080/1440/1600 eyefinity/surround but did say SLI 780's..........

What monitors will you be running with those GPUs? Quality wise like we said before it's all good and if you need audio HDMI is still the way to go but if you're also gonna use UHD and higher stuff just get a nice dual link DVI cable as it will also help just in case.

well with the 460 I will be running at 1080p with a asus vs248h-p. with my two 780's il be running at 1440p on an asus pb278q monitor.
but i just realized my monitor uses HDMI , D-Sub, DVI-D. the gtx 460 only does dvi, and mini hdmi. so what do i go with now? do they make a dvi to dvi-d adapter?

also when i go 1440p is there a special cord i need like a 1440p hdmi cord?

Don't fuss about the analog and digital difference between dvi, just get a cheap cable like this and don't worry about it. And since you live CA they offer us overnight shipping for like 7 bucks, get any extra cables that you need as well since they have the best prices available.
