Is it possible I have a "Golden" 3770K?

So I got a 3770K on the cheap through retail edge. it arrived today, and I slapped her in and immediately started OCing. I had a 3570K before some i'm not totally inexperienced. However, this one is giving me pause. Not because it requires insane vcore, but because its taking very little.

So i figured I would post here for some peer review to find out if A. Im doing it right, and B. if my CPU is golden.

I have had horrible luck with the silicon lottery ever since my phenom days. redface.gif

I hope my luck has turned around. I started at 4.5GHz and 1.2v it primed and IBT'd fine. Dropped, then dropped some more. Now im at 4.5GHz @ 1.135v in bios and under 100% load it shoots up to 1.15v

I run 30 IBT runs first for the quick and dirty, then prime for the long haul. So whats the verdict, if this turns out to be 100% stable am I good? Did my years of bad luck come to an end?

Here is a quick screenie, this is only about 20 min in prime but she already passed 30 runs of IBT.

My temps suck because my cooler is a antec kuhler 620, i plan on getting a H80i its a place holder is all.

Most of the ones I see at 1.2-1.25. 1.135 would be quite nice indeed.

I generally don't classify chips as golden until I know how far they can go.

Seems like a good chip indeed. The one I just got won't do anything higher than 4.7 at ANY voltage. I'm talking even 1.55. I hate my luck with CPUs.

You are probably good, but sometimes CPUs suddenly overclock a lot worse within a few weeks for first being used. I'm not sure if this breaking in thing is real, though.

I can attest to this happening with a 2500k I had. It needed 1.4 for 4.8, then needed 1.44 just a couple weeks later.

I hear ya man. Like I said my luck has been roten for years. my GPU wont even do 1200MHz with a unlocked voltage.....I hate my luck, hopefully this is a silver lining. biggrin.gif

So my cooler is not stock, but definitely not 5GHz capable. What clock should I aim for to determine if its really stable and golden for now?

Looks like you have a good chip there.

This is what I would do. Prime it a few hours. If it passes use it normally. If it crashed during normal operation or gaming or whatever your pc for then raise the voltage according to the BSOD.

Or you can go what a lot of people will tell which I no longer do. Prime it for 12 or more hours. I think 30 IBT runs can be considered 95% stable but it could crash. Just adjust voltages accordingly when it does.

Voltage for 5Ghz stable enough to pass superpi 32m is the way much binning was done for ivy bridge, under 1.3V were generally the golden chips, the best could manage it at 1.2V - 1.25V

I believe the break in thing, chips will generally do their best right out of the box, within hours or days of use they frequently need a voltage bump to keep running the same clocks, then can run the same voltage for a long time after with reasonable volts & temps.

Yes, 4.5GHz @ 1.15 V is "golden". For comparison's sake mine needs 1.25 V for 4.5GHz which is about average for 3770K's
