Linus interviewed the lad that designed it and got slick to give it a test.

By...running without needing to actually have a stretch of land? You did see the video right? You can run and walk on this thing like you do on a treadmill. You probably didn't see it because it explains it well.

Look guys, this is the fist step from multimillion dollar omnidirectional thread-mils build by engineers to consumer omnidirectional treadmills, it's not going to be perfect. It's already way better then the omnidirectional treadmill in the Battlefield simulator because on the battlefield simulator the area where you stand still is pretty huge and you really have to walk around to the right direction rollers in order for you to go a certain way. The Omni allows for turning in place and just running in any direction almost immediately without having to check where you are going in RR (Real Reality or the real world).

You can duck actually, but you don't actually duck, you bend over the belt support and the software converts that to ducking (that's going to be weird when the Rift gets positional tracking).

I like this first consumer version of an omnidirectional treadmill, but I think the VR market is going to explode and I'm going to wait until the actual release of the consumer version of the Rift to see if there are perhaps people or businesses with better ideas and/or versions.

I'm sure they will figure out a way... maybe not in this version, but in the future. As for helicopters and stuff, I guess you could go back to your keyboard and mouse(or joystick), no point replacing them with something made for infantry combat.

ARMA II already is a running simulator, may as well replace the button holding with actual running biggrin.gif

I can't say I'm surprised, the amount of publicity it's getting and the good first impressions it's getting from people like Linus are helping a great deal.

I think a year or two after this gets released someone will combine the oculus rift and the omni in some way(or the two companies team up), these two products go very well together... all they need on top of that is a gun controller(that can move independently of the players view, iirc not many games support this unfortunately) and some sort of hit detection(like the ARAIG, although I don't like its implementation). This is the future of gaming(for FPS's at least), and these are the first steps towards VR for consumers... I just hope developers and consumers alike begin adopting it.

Totally unrelated, but I just mistakenly read your "retired staff" tag as "retarded staff" and fell out of my chair laughing. Nothing personal, I'm just a bit tired and don't have my glasses on. redface.gif
