Oh well.
I am a mess, heh. I accidentally exaggerated in my last post.

2500k@Microcenter + Z77 Extreme 4 1155@Microcenter = $ 294.98
4670k@Microcenter + Z87 Extreme 4 1150@Microcenter = $ 359.98

So it's a 65 bucks difference. It isn't by any means that small for just those two components.
Still there's the main factor of chipset lifespan.

I apologize once again, I'm too tired.

Microcenter prices have always been so close to each other that I always opt to go for the more expensive option, unless those motherboards cost an arm and a leg.

And, yes, I know an SB will prove to be superior than his Nehalem, but I've had a 2500k and sold it for what I bought it for and then went IB, the performance difference is there (not incredible, but there). You are also talking to someone that doesn't only game but is video rendering A LOT. However, in games, anything SB or above will give him much more desirable gaming performance, anything at 4 GHz won't limit any single card config out there. However, like I said before, I am at 4.5 GHz on my IB and I couldn't stabilize 4.6 on my SB, I could have gotten lucky/unlucky chips, but that says something, and it isn't even de-lidded yet.

I don't know, I can testify to IB being decent because I have had SB mobile and desktop processors and now mobile and desktop IBs, and I can conclude that the little more you pay is worth it, IMO. However, Haswell/1150 haven't proven to be worth it yet, so it's just a waiting game.

Although, right now they have a deal going where you get $40 a compatible mobo with the purchase of a Haswell so it comes out to be only a $25 difference. In which case, it would be stupid not to go with Haswell.

Yup, I'm fine playing the waiting game for a little while longer though. Selection of 1150 mobos is somewhat slim right now so I'll probably give it another couple months to see what else shows up on the market.

"Our" Micro Center (Cincinnati FTW!) has a very good stock of 3770K's, and a very good selection of motherboards. The only board that they don't have, that's worth having, is the Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP7 (my favorite Z77 board).

Currently, you can get a 3770K for $260, buy a decent motherboard and get another $40 off for buying the combo, and if you get a Samsung SSD you get another $20 off the purchase. Look for a good open-box motherboard, I got my RIVE there as an "Open Box" yet it was still factory sealed, and even after the employee admitted to the manager that he "goofed" and marked it Open Box when it was in fact BNIB, I didn't even have to ask as they immediately honored the price as it was tagged. Got a BNIB Rampage IV Extreme with full warranty for well under $300, and they still gave me the $60 discount for buying a 3930K at the same time ($489 + $264.96, minus $60 = $690 TOTAL for 3930K + RIVE; also got a bunch of misc stuff, ended up getting over $1250 worth of stuff for $718).

That would be the way to go, IMHO.

I love our MicroCenter. The staff is actually very helpful. If I do upgrade I'm most likely going with Haswell. Unless I just replace motherboards and get one of these. It would match my theme very well
