It's already happened, and when Windows 9 comes out and it's still there, you'll use it or move to Linux and lose 80% of your games library.

In case you don't know the Windows 7 taskbar was enlarged to make touch easier, so why not take advantage of that and have a unified experience where all your programs, be they desktop apps or modern apps are all accessible from the same place, allowing you to switch quickly between them ?

2. The point of the taskbar is to also quickly switch between apps. Having to deal with one taskbar and another hidden taskbar is clunkier.

3. Why would showing the taskbar on the Start screen make right-clicking useless ? If anything, righ-clicking should bring a rich context menu with all the options you already have on the desktop.

4. You don't have to have the taskbar always visible, what I mean is that it should be visible on the Start screen in the same way as it is visible on the desktop, so any customizations you would have, like having it auto-hide would apply in both cases.

5. Having it open the location means context switching again as Metro goes away and the desktop returns. It's a clunky experience.

Oh you're talking about the shelf? I thought you were talking about the taskbar that appears when you right click something in the start screen. Agreed 100% on that point though. I don't even use the damn thing. I could go either way with the taskbar, so I have no qualms with that suggestion. However, I disagree with the drag and drop. I don't think it's clunky, especially with the upcoming features, but at the end of the day it's all relative to the person. I do see we're on agreement on better optimizing the start screen in general, which is great thumb.gif.

Like I seem to repeat often, I love Win8, but to say Microsoft couldn't improve on it is ridiculous. My problem is that people want sweeping changes to basically revert the OS to Win7. Don't agree with that at all. Microsoft knows it can improve the new experience and 8.1 proves this. Imo asking for the start menu back is telling MS to cop out and just go with what you're familiar with. We should be telling that since they've designed it, better it.

Still no folders on the all app menu, what about us people that have professional programs that throw a crap ton of PDFs and sub-programs onto the all app menu? mad.gif

lol, I started working on a Tandy laptop where the operating environment was Deskmate, should I still be convinced that that is the best thing ever ? (Edit: actually I started on a desktop with DOS 3.3)

Then I moved on to IBM PC-DOS 4 on an IBM PS/1 that had a custom launch screen with quite an interesting tab based file manager. Best configuration ever ?

Then I moved on to MS-DOS 5 and then 6, 6.1, etc, along with Windows 3.0 and then Windows 3.1 and then Windows 3.1 with Tabworks, which was a Windows 3.1 customization software. Best package ever ?

Then I moved on to Windows 95 Final Beta Release.

And then to the final product along with the Plus! Pack. Best ever ?

Then I moved on to Windows XP, having worked with Windows 98 and Windows Me in other computers. Best OS ever ?

Then I worked for several years on a PC with Windows Vista. Best OS ever ?

Then I moved on to Windows 7 Beta, and then installed the Release Candidate and then bought the final version.

Then I put together a PC just to test the Developer Preview of Windows 8 (see link in my sig) back in 2011, and then installed the Consumer Preview on a laptop.

And for the first time I felt like Microsoft had made an OS where improving workflow and listening to user feedback had taken a back seat to try to shove an app store down people's throats in order to try to make up the lost time - and lots of money! - to Apple and Google.

It wasn't therefore just an annoying and unfinished product - as the Windows 8.1 update proves - to use, it made me as a consumer feel irritated with the company's arrogance.

I am still hoping that they come to their senses and provide more free updates to make Windows 8 - or 9 what it should have been from the start.

There is one thing I honestly don't understand about people who like Windows 8 - people who don't like it and come to comment here are usually Windows users, not Linux or OS X users - I could understand some clubism and accusations that others were just trying to downplay the OS, if that were the case, but it's exactly the opposite, here are Windows users wanting a better OS, and it's somehow badly regarded ? What is this ? Honestly, what is this ? Of course I'd like to have Windows 8 as my running OS, because I'd like to have the better task scheduler and the more efficient RAM utilization and better battery life on laptops, but I won't pay additional money to 3rd parties to have additional processes running to fix what Microsoft should do themselves, it's really not worth the trouble to install it as it is.

I've been under a rock and also posting this comment before watching the video, so sorry for possible stupid question.

Is Win 8.1 going to be basically a free DLC for those of us with windows 8? Or some kind of upgrade discounted purchase? Or will it be a regular automatic windows update?

Thanks guys.
