Internet disconnects at exactly 11:40pm each night

Thread Starter
I have been experiencing a rather unusual issue over about the last three to four nights where (during gaming usually) my connection drops from the game, internet and teamspeak at 11:40pm and I have no idea why.

My router runs DHCP and I recently had to reset the device the day that this started happening so I think that is the problem, but don't know where to begin to fix it. I don't know if I can have just my primary ethernet connected LAN desktop run in Static IP to prevent the issue, and I don't think it is lease time related since that is set to a week by default.

Any advice?

1 of 3 things are causing this.
Option 1 you have a process that is scheduled to start on your local machine that kicks off every night at 11:40 (some sort of update or scan)

Option 2 your router sucks and is overheating which would be sporadic, or it is doing some sort of scheduled task during that time period

Option 3 your ISP is doing something during that time period

Comcast just did a maintenance this past weekend in my area, and that's what exactly been happening to my internet, it would disconnect at certain time every day, I would just give it a week before doing anything and see if its fix.

I don't think my router is overheating...its a WD MyNet N750...which is less than 6 months old. I checked the task scheduler and I don't see anything set to run or that has run during that time period. My connection drops at 11:40 and resumes within about 30 seconds...so it is quite short, but very annoying.

I don't know how to view my router's tasks, never even knew that beyond IP lease/renew it could do other assigned tasks. Any advice here?

If it is my ISP, I will have to troubleshoot that on my own I guess. TimeWarner sucks. I bet it is them.

One thing that you could try, although we likely already know the result, is at 11:39, run a ping -t www.google.com and wait to see if the pings drop at 11:40. Log into your router at that time too and see what your IP address is. It will likely be the same or close to what it is if you do that now, or 169.254.x.x or maybe 0.0.0.0. That would tell you if your modem loses its IP address and the ping should come back as failed at 11:40ish too. I had a friend in high school who had a similar problem where every night at midnight, his internet would drop. He, interestingly enough, found that his modem was plugged into a timer that shut off power to his modem every night at midnight because his parents didnt want him online all night. You mentioned it comes back 30 seconds later, so its likely a problem with your ISP.

Final thought is it could be the DHCP lease time if it is set to 24hrs

I'll wait until 11:38 rolls around tonight and run the ping test and cross-ref my dynamic IP through 11:41. We will see...
