There are two additional pins on the chips so I do not believe the FM2 will be able to accept the newer chips however the newer FM2+ will be able to accept the older APUs from Trinity and Richland. I am pretty sure that is how it will be backwards compatible.

Oh wait, I'm going to be skipping it for Ivy Bridge-E.

Don't the AM3+ FXs have couple more pins than AM3, too? I'm not sure if Kaveri will be backwards compatible, but I certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility.

I believe this is wrong, watch video starting at 3:12

He says richland is compatible with trinity mobos, aka FM2, and that theyre sticking with that socket our new product line next year, aka kaveri ...if i understand correctly thinking.gif

There's a lot of confusion going on with Kaveria/Richland. Some say FM2 motherboards will be compatible with Kaveri, some say it will be like AMX(+) line of products. We'll just have to wait and see

Compatible with Trinity and Richland
For more information on AMD's Socket FM2 +

AMD's press conference is not until a few hours back, as there is from the fairgrounds at Computex 2013 more information about " Kaveri ". This put upward compatibility of Richland to the new socket FM2 +, which is intended for the new APUs, a closer dar. also allowed so the first look at the new base.

Surprisingly, AMD had on the third day of Computex 2013 announced that today presented " Richland "APUs are fit for the future for the desktop and FM2 + fit into the new socket. This base was a few days ago without an official word on an AMD roadmap surfaced , further information was not available.

At the fairgrounds, we were, however, find it on the stand by ECS Elitegroup. The manufacturer provides the Elite Group A87F2-TI already made ??a mini-ITX board with the new socket FM2 +. Of Kaveri with GDDR5 memory (like the Jaguar design in the PlayStation 4 ) or similar fantasies of the rumor mill can be based on this board - goodbye but finally, because apparently it just goes with the platform - at least for the start of the platform DDR3-1866 and thus continue as before.

ECS Elitegroup A87F2-TI with Socket FM2 +

The A78 chipset, which is used when Elitegroup A87F2-TI, is only a minimal refresh of the current A75

Roy Taylor from AMD stopped by to bring us all the details on AMD's "Richland" series of FM2 socket APUs.

AMD A-Series 'Kaveri' may require a new socket
http://www.sweclockers.com/nyhet/16999-amd-a-serien-kaveri-kan-krava-ny-sockel
Quote:
Lisa Su reveals that AMD now has access to functioning circuits architecture Kaveri and demonstrated this with a computer system that runs the game DmC: Devil May Cry. In this connection, also showed the processor for SweClockers emitted, which in appearance looks to fit the socket FM2, which is also confirmed by Lisa Su.

Another of AMD's representatives argue that it is unclear whether Kaveri suited to today's motherboards. Because of the major changes towards Trinity and Richland with new demands on voltage regulation, which probably means that the Kaveri will require an updated socket FM2. This can be named socket FM2 +.

AMD announces that some motherboards can work with an updated BIOS / UEFI, but this may vary depending on model and design, not unlike the situation at the launch of socket AM3 + for FX-series "Bulldozer". However, nothing is yet set in stone.

Got to agree with Bassefrom on this. some AM3 motherboards from MSI and Asus supported AM3+ FX processors (via beta BIOS)

Hadn't seen that yet but still very vague since we don't know when kaveri will launch exactly. Also when you look at the differences in the FM2 and FM2+ sockets above you can clearly see where the extra pins are on the FM2+. So by that standard(if those pictures are correct) the pinouts would not be compatible from FM2+ APUs to FM2 sockets. You would have some bent pins when trying to seat the APU.

Again I agree as well only time will tell. AMD has done that before where it didn't seem to be compatible and then out of nowhere "Oh yeah the new stuff is still compatible with the old so no worries." smile.gif
