Pentium D Question

Thread Starter
hey guys,

been looking into getting myself a AMD build but i am having problems finding a CPU and also finding a motherboard compatible too, its a struggle. so i was looking to going back to intel, into the Pentium D range.

i was thinking of getting a

Pentium D 945
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=432799

the only problem is i want to keep nearly everything else the same, can someone help me find a motherboard for it. also it is important if it can be PC3200 and have a AGP port, overclocking potential could be good too.

thanks for any help provided.

here's the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA. It'll handle anything socket 775 and runs both DDR2 and DDR, has PCI-E and AGP. I doubt it's a good overclocker but it has alot of good features

can you find one on scan.co.uk, i just want to make sure that PC3200 memory is compatible with CPU.

You want to keep your vid card and memory from your current build? If you want to use the Pentium D with AGP and DDR, here's a couple of options. But I think that you'll save yourself headaches in the long run if you get newer stuff. DDR and AGP are older technology. DDR2 and PCI-E are the way to go. Also, Core 2 Duos gives much better bang for the buck, especially if you factor in the crazy OCing potential of the chips. You will have to spend more to get all that stuff, but you'll futureproof yourself a lot more with that than with a Pentium D running DDR and AGP. Even the C2D E6300 OCed will pwn any Pentium D. It might even do that at stock.

the point is to save money. i am willing to jump to a 7300GS or 7300LE 256mb PCI-E so i can do alot more with my computer then, i want to keep the memory because i want to keep down the price so DDR2 aint going to work for me £110 for some decent DDR2 memory, i dont have the cash to splash on that at the moment. hence why i am not going AM2 or going to CORE DUO.

from scan.co.uk i have picked myself more or less what i was looking for but choosing Pentium D 925 instead of Pentium D 945 so i can cut down the price and able to get myself the PCI-E card [256MB 7300GS 550/800 4PipeLines] all together including shipping it is £177.98 for this, which is quite a bit, i was willing to spend £150 dont mind the extra £30 to spend, but thats my absolute limit.

I would say you should go for a S939 rig instead to save some money.

AGP Rig:
Opty 144: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=289427 £61
Asrock AR-939DUAL-SATA2: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=291356 £39

Total: £100

PCI-E Rig:
Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=158259 £94
Opty 144: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=289427 £61
256MB ASUS 7300GT: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=442875 £59

Or, if money goes for it:
128MB Gigabyte 7600GT: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=466648 £80

Do you have any excact budget?

yep its just i want to go dual core, everytime i ask about the Opteron 170 and that ASROCK motherboard they tell me they aren't instock and they are not sure when it maybe back in...

with the pentium D i get the dual core, motherboard and a new PCI-E card [which is better than mine]

which i have worked out is £148.88 including shipping, which is more or less what i was going to pay out for the AMD.

Dual-Core isn't really worth it... Unless, what are you going to use it for?

well, going dual core is ALLWAYS good,ALLWAYS,for games and for apps
its a big diffrnce when one core has to run 40 proccess's (thats including the windows proccess's and explorer.exe which slow teh %$#$ out of any single core)
and when one core runs windows and one core,WHOLY runs a game, big performance diffrence there.not to mention the multi-tasking.
+ going core2dou is a better choice really, altho a little bit more expensive,id rather buy a whole new system instead of upgrade the system i currently have because the performance is uncomperable!
and the price's should drop after xmas.
