Do we really need to install windows 7 updates?

So, it seems my rig feels much better (and gaming) without any updates from windows. So, how important are the updates in terms of security? I currently use avast premier edition.

Thank you.

.... are you serious? Please tell me this is a joke? Updates protect your OS from vulnerabilities. You think just having an anti virus will protect you? It doesn't. You need to have regular Windows updates to keep your system in tip top shape. Just like how a game receives patches to fix issues or gives functionality, so does an OS. If you honestly think that not updating Windows is a good thing, please sell you rig and go back to playing monopoly with your grandma.

Even the most popular software protection is vulnerable. My father's vista had Norton a few years back while it was working fine. However, a backdoor Trojan H allowed some nasty stuff that he couldn't remove easily. He's tried everything (except formatting the drive from another drive) but it's suffering from the patched backdoor still.
It's your device, do what you want. Higher, 64-bit browsers laugh at root-kits because they are ineffective. 64-bits are still prone to infection but are harder to penetrate. Some browsers like Waterfox & Windows 7 ie9 64-bit browser ((now discontinued if you update to ie10) unless you want to reinstall the OS anyway) are some choices for you.

I'm kind of surprised you are seeing that much of a difference from Windows Updates. I understand they can add to CPU overhead by adding real time code that runs 24/7 but I would have figured your rig could power through anything like that.

That all said I agree with Dr3am for the most part but would probably take a bit more open/liberal of a stance on it. The vast majority of Windows updates are for the users benefit by adding security measures and/or patching existing holes in security. Some other updates are intended to increase performance and stability as well. So the real question becomes, is the performance of your computer while gaming worth the risk of not having these updates? Unfortunately I cannot answer that question as its different for everyone. Me personally, I install updates as they come out, haven't really ever noticed any performance hits from them though. If I were to take a performance hit, I suspect the severity of said hit would have a great influence on this.

Speaking of, have you ever tested your actual performance before and after getting updates? I'd be curious to see what kind of actual impact they are having.

Nexus needs a spanking tongue.gif

I rarely do windows update due to the fact that I never turn off my computer because in the game I play I'm always on and afk so if I wake up to check something before I go to work and my desktop is completely clean(windows update forced reset around 3am) I would be angry. I also reformat on a quarterly basis to keep performance sometimes.

I believe its alright keeping from updates if all you do is use the PC to play games and visit your regular sites. I have a separate computer for browsing websites and torrenting so good lucking trying to steal my information. I also have avast internet security

4 weeks ago I was getting ready for bed and as usual when I tried to shut my pc down it needed to install 2 updates. I waited for it to shut down completely then turned the power off at the socket as I want to save power. Next morning....nothing. Windows appeared to have vanished more or less, and I am still struggling to get my PC back to full health.

lol I'm just speaking the truth. OP has been here long enough to know that Windows updates are very important for the life of your OS.

Why not install updates? Thou, if you have a really slow connection... like mine then just manually update it every week or something.

Although i wish they had the option of automatically shutting down your computer or hibernating when the updates finish. That is if you want to save power.
