PSU gone bad? GPU 2nd fan won't spin + other issues

Thread Starter
Hi, I recently noticed that my second fan wouldn't start spinning when I powered on my computer. I would end up booting into windows then freezing. Both fans will however turn on if I only leave one pci-e connector in the slot of my gpu (of course the gpu doesn't power on). The computer is the one in my signature. I reset all the overclocks. I can boot into safe mode, but not normal windows. I'm really not sure what the issue is. Either the GPU or PSU is my guess so far. Maybe one pci-e connector is bad and not transferring enough current? Both fans spin when one connector is in, but not two. I'll try each cable individually. This sucks. redface.gif

Thanks in advance.

If you can go into your cmos and or safe mode with your video card in then so far we knoe its functional.Sounds like to me you are going to have to reload your os, if you can go into safe mode but not normal that tells me you will have to reload due to either viruses or a something to do with your os. My first suggestion would be to test your hardware ( if you have another pc to test your hard drive and such in) . Let me know

Minus the fan issue of course

I tested another/spare gpu. That did the samething when I loaded everything. OS froze and crashed. It probably does need to be reformatted. I do have trouble turning on my PC though. It takes a few tries. I also put in new ram, so it's not the ram. That leaves PSU, HDD or motherboard correct?

Sometimes the secondary GPU fan doesn't spin when you have it in crossfire or SLI and it isn't being stressed. As soon as you load up a game or benchmark it should start spinning when it becomes active.

The booting into windows deal sounds like a botched OS.

I'm backing things up now as we speak. I don't have SLI for the GTX 460, perhaps I just never noticed it before. I used afterburner to make custom fan profiles. I just found it weird with one connector in it ran both fans 100% vs the one.

Thanks for the input so far guys. Both of you.

I was fooling with two 7770s this weekend and noticed the bottom fan would only spin under load. If I disabled crossfire they both spin all the time.

I have only a SINGLE GPU with dual fans. There is no crossfire or sli. rolleyes.gif

OH, lol, yeah you might have a burnt out fan or something. IDK the whole situation sounds peculiar. Try to get your hands on a spare PSU to test with. Then possibly a spare GPU.

I actually figured it out. My HDD went bad (reformatting it and its bad sectors as we speak). I popped a spare in and formatted/installed Win 7 and no problems...so far. Thanks y'all for your help.
