Ancient to Modern: an AMD64 build to Intel, Haswell or not

Hey OCN, it's been a good while since I've been in a position to think about upgrading my machine, but I've recently landed in this position. I've been trying to familiarize myself with the landscape a little for the last few weeks and think I need some opinions on what I should be looking at. I was curious to see if Haswell would be a prudent upgrade, but before I get into that a little info on what my current position:

Current PC Build, circa 2007
  • ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe • AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ • 6GB DDR2 (400MHz) • EVGA 9800GTX • a few 7200 HDDs • Samsung 275T

Yea, I'm kinda behind, so I know that pretty much any upgrade is gonna give rather large performance gains. I've started my build already by getting a FD Define R4 and a Seasonic Plat 660. As for the main components I am looking at around $1200 max, but this includes the fact that I'd like to also get a SSD and have been looking into the Samsung 840 (128GB) as my host drive for the OS and main software.

As for what I'll be using it for and how:
  • It will be my gaming (all genres), graphics (only really photoshop/illustrator), web design, digital audio production (generic DAW such as DigitalPerformer), and overall general workstation.
  • I would like to keep this thing as quiet as I possibly can, and as such will %100 be getting an aftermarket cooler, though I'm not sure what (already cord suspended my HDDs). Not sure of Noctua would be overkill.
  • I am not looking to overclock as I don't really have a lot of experience in this arena (read any at all). With that said, I am open to the idea of potentially learning how to overclock later, and maybe it would be worth it to get a board now that has the capability so that once I have more time I could try to learn this, but certainly not right now as I don't feel I have the time to learn. This is probably the biggest "what peripherals do I get question" as I'm not sure if it would be worth the price difference to get a non-oc setup vs paying a little more to have that option.
  • I'd like to leave the option open to dual GPU in the future, but for now I'd be going for a single GPU setup. At this current juncture I was thinking of going gtx770 instead of 680 as the 780 is just too pricey.
  • I would like native usb 3.0, and UEFI.

With all the haswell info and benchmarks recently, would it be good to go to haswell directly (the additions to 87 boards seem to be more the draw from my reading), or would it be more prudent to look at other configs, like ivy or sandy?

In my initial look, I looked at an i5-4670, 8GB RAM, some MB (been with Asus for a long while, but was also looking at gigabyte). The motherboard choices are super out of my comfort zone though, do I go for a Z-XX board, or other prefix (what are the prefixes and what do they mean feature-wise, even a good link would be helpful), or would something else be more reasonable? Obviously no fans on the MB because of noise.

I guess I'm trying to not spend more money than is needed while still having a powerful enough system to handle next gen games easily. Thanks in advance for all the thoughts and possible help!

OK, I'll give you a simple rundown on current Intel solutions (both Ivy Bridge and Haswell, Sandy Bridge is largely irrelevant at this point for a new build.)

First, if you want to preserve the ability to OC down the road, you will require a K-suffixed CPU and a Z#7-chipset motherboard (as the B#5 and H#7 chipsets don't allow OCing). See the choices below:

Ivy Bridge: i5-3570K or i7-3770K + a Z77 chipset motherboard
Haswell: i5-4670K or i7-4770K + a Z87 chipset motherboard

The i5 chips are quad-core chips with 6MB of cache, whereas the i7 chips are quad-core chips with hyper-threading and 8MB of cache. The i5 is more cost-effective for gaming, but the i7's hyper-threading is useful for things like video editing and such.

The motherboards I'd recommend are listed below. Note that both boards have SLI capability, native SATA-III, USB 3.0, and PCIe 3.0, as well as UEFI BIOS:

Ivy Bridge: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
Haswell: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H (only difference is Z87, not Z77)

As for the RAM, you'd want to have a 2x4GB kit with speeds of DDR3-1600 at minimum, DDR3-2133 would be optimal. Try to get CL9 or lower for DDR3-1600, 11 or lower for DDR3-2133.

noctua will be quiet, if you set it up properly. probably one of the best cooling manufacturers in this respect. their fans are quiet as when u set them at lower RPM.

if you get a z77/z87 mobo you can overclock. (ivy/haswell) otherwise u cant. u should get one anyways because this chipset is going to provide the best bang/buck looking at the rest of the features.

mobos:
most recommended mobo brands on OCN are, in no order:
gigabyte
asrock
asus

asus tends to be a bit more expensive than asrock and gigabyte, which have long been favorites around here for that reason. I prefer asus for the bios/personal experience with reliability. any of these brands would be a great choice, just make sure you choose one with the features you need. pay particular attention to pcie x16 lanes and SLI compatibility. sometimes they are advertising boards as 4way sli but they only support 2 double gpu cards in 2 slots. theres only a couple boards out there that actually support 3 way and 4 way sli, if that is on your list. also make sure the chipset is the one that supports overclocking if you intend to do so (and you should).

overclocking:
overclocking is easy, safe and fun. you can do it without much learning or concern if you are careful to follow advice of members here. its only risky if you push for high overclocks, or don't pay attention to what you are changing. a small overclock should be considered mandatory for anyone building a custom system, theres absolutely no reason not to. (other than stability hyper-sensitive environments)

I would suggest following utilities if you want to know everything about your system:

diagnostics/monitoring:
cpu-z
siw
realtemp
cupid HWmonitor
evga precision
gpu-z

stress testing:
prime95
linx
3dmark11
heaven dx11
NVidia island (handy for NVidia quick testing)

and then the most elite stuff:

resource monitor, performance monitor, god mode.

anti malware/security:
updated windows firewalled and defendered
malwarebytes
combofix
RKill (may not work on x64)

if you catch a virus, DC internets, kill everything you can with Rkill or manually, then run malwarebytes and combofix in safe mode.
