I moved away from H2O a few years ago, so I never ran my 980x above 1.29v. But I've seen them hitting 4.5GHz with 1.375v-ish. But they definitely need H2O. My friend's 970 ran 4.2GHz with 1.24v, so I expect it definitely could have hit 4.5GHz with a little more advanced cooling.

As you overclock on the x58 chipset you need to watch out for some RAM disappearing occasionally. That chipset was notorious for that and was sometimes caused by too high of RAM or uncore frequency, vDIMM voltages being out of tolerance, or the tension of the heatsink on the CPU socket. When I was playing around with OCing, after making a change and rebooting I would go back into the BIOS and see how much RAM it was detecting. If it wasn't right I would tweak something and reboot again into the BIOS until I figured out where the problem was. After I got it to see all of the RAM then I would let it boot to Windows and check it again through a desktop shortcut to "system" in the control panel.

IMO, Intel Burn Test is harder on an overclock than Prime95. Both are good to use but IBT stresses everything more, especially the RAM overclock.

Gulftown (970, 980X, 980, 990X) reacts differently from Bloomfield (920-960, 965x, and 975x), so the same settings are often not applicable to all three.

Gulftown is 32nm, doesn't usually require or react as well to higher voltages, especially regarding uncore. Uncore clock also works differently on Gulftown; you only need 1.5x DDR speed, not 2x as with Bloomfield.

CPU PLL on both Bloomfield and Gulftown is often best undervolted. I normally use 1.3v on my i7 970.

1.35v uncore/qpi is high for Gulftown.

Often true, but this has nothing to do with the chipset.

I found that increasing QPI/Dram voltage would fix that. I saw it a lot when people maxed out their dims too. I think the default is 1.10v, with 1.35v being on the high end. I found that 1.225v to 1.275v usually was the fix. But it really depended on the CPU's Internal memory Controller (IMC), which is what really causes the issue. its not so much the chipset. The Gulftowns tend to have a stronger IMC than the Bloomfields though since their cores were meant for servers.

Don't get your hopes too high. My 980x hits a wall at 4.35, and won't pass it without voltage I'm not comfortable with (>1.4V). My temps are good too, even at 1.4V and 4.35 I only hit 75degrees. Its all about what kind of chip you've got.

I have my overclock stable at 4.2ghz on 1.3v after prime 95 testing. I read the post by Blameless saying, "CPU PLL on both Bloomfield and Gulftown is often best undervolted. I normally use 1.3v on my i7 970.".

I left my CPU PLL on auto which the bios was showing as around 1.8v. Should I go ahead and lower it even though the side panel in the bios said 1.8v is the minimum?

If you can lower it, try to do so.

Some chips get iffy below 1.5v or so, but I have yet to see a Gulftown where 1.5-1.6v was not at least as stable as 1.8v+.

Knocking it down to 1.3v should save you 1-3C, all other things being equal. On some chips it will even allow higher clocks.

The PLL chip doesn't need more voltage, but rather the right wave. So its not necessarily the voltage adding power that stabilizes it. I've found 1.6v-1.65v to be optimum because it lowers the temps ~1-2°c.
