Need help choosing a DSLR....

Thread Starter
Hello all. Need you help with picking a new camera. Right now I am using a Canon PowerShot SX130 IS 12.1MP. It is an okay camera, but I was possibly looking into a DSLR. What do you all think of THIS bundle??? It is a Canon EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR Kit, Black w/ EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens Kit w/ Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Bundle for $1,290

I don't know anything when it comes to what lenses I would need or anything like that.

right now sony is having a sale on their a77.

link

if you are looking for a good dslr really nothing can compare in this price point (900 body only with grip).

imo a 1200 dollar rebel really isnt worth it with 2 kit lenses (the 18-135 is decent)....

I assume the price is in USD.
For the same setup is cheaper at B&H. 1,248 USD.

What are you going to shoot??

Nope, it is Canadian dollars. I live near Edmonton, AB. Stuff is always higher priced here! And I don't want to buy from a US store because then we get charged tariffs when they get shipped here.

You're going to laugh and think I'm weird, but a lot of what I shoot is power poles/our power grid. But I also like to take pictures if I go to a zoo or similar. You can check out my Flickr to see what I do shoot.

Mmm. If you like more pixels get a D3200/D7100 or if you really want that flip up screen get a D5200

Have you though about a Bridge ? That's a pricey DSLR just to shoot poles and power grids tongue.gif. Have you checked into Nikon ? They've some nice bundles sometimes too.

you just need a general walkaround camera it sounds like.

go to store hold and test each camera in your price range and buy the one that feels best. megapixels dont matter and you will not be able to tell the difference in image quality between any of the major DSLR brands. they all produce high quality cameras and lenses. some have equipment that is intended for professional market but that doesnt mean that brand is better than another because you arent buying equipment to be used for full time professional photography thumb.gif just buy what feels right and doesnt make your wallet hurt too much wink.gif

So this is what I bought.... Got it at staples for $684 after taxes. Saved $5 on the case, saved $10 on the Sony SD card, & saved $5 on the tripod with coupons you get for buying a camera that is over $200. I was having a look at spare batteries and they are wanting over $80 for one. I think I'll be waiting a bit before I get a spare.

Thanks everyone for your help!
