Will overclocking give me linear speed boost?

Maybe a stupid question but I was just wondering if overclocking my 3570 from 3.5 ghz to 4.2ghz would give a 20% improvement(20% higher clock speed) or if it was more or less? Trying to decide if its worth it to upgrade to a WC setup and go for the glory or not. biggrin.gif

i dont think it is linear but will give you a performance increase for sure. when you say 3570 do you mean the K version or non k?

Sorry I should have specified the K version. I see these seem to go up to 4.5ghz on water pretty easily so I figured 3.5 to 4.5ghz would be a 28% gain if its linear which would be worth the additional WC expense IMO. However if its NOT linear and i'm only going to get say 15% it wouldn't be worth it for me.

for 4.4 -4.5 you should have no problems with a decent air cooler, no need to WC.

if you are doing something that is cpu intensive the gain could be considered linear, I think, if I understand what your really asking.

eg since GHz is how many cycles your cpu can run, provided it is indeed the bottleneck for your given application, it will run that much faster, under nominal conditions. or it might be a bit less, due to memory stuff and threading stuff.

so your 28% OC might mean 26% better "linear" performance, in the way I believe you are referring to it. this is just an example # but roughly how it will work out. your cpu will get things done 26% faster

now for gaming or most applications, your performance gain will be considerably less if they aren't cpu bound. most games would see little to no improvement, depending on the gcard your feeding. and for memory operations your memory speed and also SSD will have more effect than the CPU.

To add, even though you do get linear gains with CPU frequency... there are other hard limits like cache size and access latency which can still bottleneck your application.
