I should have been more clear. I said that SLI would be smoother than CF, but I never said that it would be perfect, or as smooth as a single GPU setup. Although I've never experienced SLI/CF first hand, I've read that multi-GPU setups generally have more issues than single-GPU setups. This is one of the major reasons why I went with the Titan instead of a 690.

I think the prevalent notion about SLI being better than CF actually means that SLI experiences stuttering in lesser number of occasions than CF does.

Speaking about your experience(s), if you didnt get/dont notice stuttering then good for you. Not everyone notices it and thats okay. I was suggesting SLI over CF under the assumption that Melee is able to notice stuttering if it is present. Until we see how much of the CF issues AMD can fix with their fix, SLI would be a safer option.

Thanks for the help everyone. cheers.gif

Unfortunately, I need a bit more. sadsmiley.gif lol

After seeing the reviews and performance of the Haswell CPUs, I'm seriously considering selling mine since I haven't bought a motherboard yet and going with either a 3770K or 3930K. On the used market, they seem to be falling into the $225-$250 and $350-$400 range, respectively. The 4770K is supposed to have extreme heat and overclocking issues which is going to negate any performance gains it would have, if I understand correctly. What do you guys think? Should I stay with the Haswell or go back to Ivy Bridge or SB-E and look for a cheap, high end motherboard that's great for Overclocking and Multi-GPUs? If so, which would you recommend between those two?

My other question is about if I do go with 2-3 7970s/7950s, is it a better option to go non-reference with quality air coolers or should I buy reference cards for cheaper and use the Dwood bracket to mount a Corsair Hydro Unit on each one? (Custom Loops are far too expensive and honestly scare the hell out of me.) If the CLC option is better, how large of a motherboard and case would I need and how much room between each PCI-E Slot would be required?

I believe that is all for now. thumb.gif In terms of raw price to performance, I just can't justify going Nvidia right now. The 680/670s are still selling for roughly the same price they were before and the 780/770s are too expensive, imo, when the 770 and 7970 are equal and the 780 isn't fast enough to justify a $350 price increase over what I can get a 7970 for. Hopefully, I'm being smart about this? lol

Haswell seems to be little bit better only if you don't overclock. Hopping myself to Ivy-E as that shouldn't even be planned to work on more mobile platforms (no integrated graphics).

I had 2x 6950 two years ago when Bitcoin started blooming. Tested for the first time how Crossfire worked on Deus Ex Human Evolution. After couple days I moved one card away to other computer and I was confused... even though fps-number dropped by ~50%, the gameplay looked exactly the same.

Now they developed a way to see the true colors of Crossfire vs SLI:
- http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-TITAN-Performance-Review-and-Frame-Rating-Update/Frame-Rat <- they even kicked out CrossFire from the results as it was that bad.

Basically in worst case (Battlefield 3), you get a very small frame (you won't notice this, but the software programs will notice this as 1 frame) being done by one card then a big one from another. So that's 2 frames, but your eyes only notice 1. This means that the game runs just as good for your eyes on 1 card than 2 cards.

See the small frame that is colored white

Single GPU cards from AMD or Nvidia won't have this issue. Nvidia SLI has had hardware solution on this for years.

7990 Seems to have some experimental frame-metering support. If it's software-based, it might work on cards before 7990.

I would wait first to see if 7970 would get frame-metering feature. Hope it won't get input lag issues.

sli and crossfire are no good I'm getting rid of my other 780 hate the crap performance sli at 5760*1080 gives compared to single gpu. SINGLE GPU WILL ALWAYS PERFORM BETTER. I have zero problem dropping settings slighly to gain butter smoothness.

780 is a perfect stop gap till the next gen 20nm 9970 comes out shortly. YAY 3-4 months and the 9970 will DESTROY the titan!

Gah, I don't know what to do! lol

With three monitors, I don't see a single 780 handling that well. I could be wrong, and very well might be, but that's an extremely demanding workload. I also fear that buying a 780 right now will lead to a large loss in money before long. The $650 price tag is, as we all know, a bit too high and once AMD releases the 8900s, I'm assuming they will plummet.

It really sucks that everyone's experiences with SLI/CFX vary so greatly and that there seem to be so many problems with it. The price of the 7900 cards right now is so great for the performance they offer, but once again, a single card is not going to handle three screens.

Gah! thinking.gif

Just a Little Correction. Its the 9900 series. The 8000 series is an OEM rebranding of the 7000 series.

Is it 9900 or 9700? lol They're starting to get confusing with their numbering.

I wonder what happens after the 9000s? ohno-smiley.gif Are we going into 5 digits?

I'd guess it would be the same thing as it is now. 9700 entry level, 9800 mid range and 9900 high end. Good question. They could be like Radeon HD X1700 or whatever.

OP the CF frame pacing driver should be released by July. that should fix all frametime issues and make CF as smooth as SLI. just wait fot that driver and then pick up another HD 7970.

I have two quick questions if you guys don't mind.

First, I've read some things that said adding a third card to a CFX setup will add the extra power needed to alleviate the microstutter problems that some experience. However, I know that it's mostly the drivers that cause this issue so I'm assuming that's false?

Second, how does a 7990 compare to CFX/SLI Performance? I have never owned a dual PCB card such as this so I'm not familiar with them at all. I did see that it destroys the Titan and 780 in basically everything while also having 6GB of VRAM and it can be found used for around the same price as a used Titan or new 780. Would this be a better option?

Thanks!
