4770k + Noctua NH-D14 temps - Page 2

Well on my 4770K im using a Corsair H110 with 2 x 140mm Stock fans on low speed. Here are temps for following....>>>

@ Stock 3.50ghz Turbo 4.0Ghz -- 1.15v / Idle = 23-27c Load = 50-58c
@ 4.30Ghz -- 1.21v / Idle = 27-32c Load =55-69c
@ 4.60ghz -- 1.35v / Idle = 27-32c Load = 70-83c

With decent 140mm fans and an aggressive fan curve the temps would be much lower, but i like near to silent as possible.

And Support Analyst by day tongue.gif I breathe this stuff (and games). Yeah, I think I may add some more fans. It's a nice case, the Define R4.. it has a ton of room for fans, including underneath. It's also raised on legs, so there's lots of ventilation underneath if I want to put a fan. There's mounting spots everywhere for fans.. it just came with the 2x stock (one intake, one outtake in the usual locations).

Do you think that would help with cooling the processor though? Given the IHS not being soldered etc, I would think the TIM underneath that would be the main bottleneck. :-(

Also, on the Planetside 2 thing, I have to say... it's way smoother than my 2500k @ 4.5ghz.. it seems to maintain a consistent framerate a lot more. Even if it does dip down, it doesn't spike and bounce all around like it did before, so it doesn't feel nearly as unresponsive in heavy situations.

Quick question, is this normal loading temps you're talking about? Or slamming it with something like Aida64/Prime95 Small FFT or similiar?

If you have a few spare fans lying about then give it a go and try different configurations, can't hurt. See if temps drop a few degrees by having one more intake fan, or one more outward fan, or both ! biggrin.gif

I use 3 Intake and 3 out, but try different ways you might be surprised the difference it can make. I noticed the same with games as you but in BF3 thumb.gif

Edit: Temps are from AIDA64 ,Cinebench, wPrime 32m & 1024M , SuperPi 32M , Valley, Heaven , Intel IBT on High ,and Vantage. Ive not used Prime yet rolleyes.gif

Sorry to be nitpicky, is that Aida64 with a balanced test (the default 4 things checked) or FPU only? Just trying to establish a baseline here. smile.gif

Cool, thanks. That makes sense, because I see similar temps in that case. I'd be curious to see what you get @ 1.21v using an FPU only test or a Prime Small FFT. Those tend to drive the processor closer to the upper thermal limits, well, for me anyways. In every day use, I know I'll never see temps anywhere near those situations.

Would more fans in this case help? This case has some acoustic padding that I think may be creating higher temps. I've also noticed it takes a bit longer for my GTX 670 to hit it's idle temp of 30c, compared to my Corsair 500R case.

I've got a Fractal Design R4 case for my daughter's PC, and I can tell you with absolutely certainty that just using the two stock front fans is going to create a lot of internal heat in that case. Your best bet is to get a 280 or 240mm radiator up top and blow the heat directly out of the case. Of course, this might negate the "quiet" aspect of the FD R4 case, which is specifically why I bought it. For me, it's not a big deal, my daughter (she's 8) isn't running any demanding games at the moment, so her GTX 470 and 2600K is idling fairly cool with just 2 front and 1 back fan.

Your core temps are WAY too high, but it could just be that you're bathing that Noctua HSF in recirculated hot air inside the case.

Keep in mind those higher temps were doing Aida64 FPU only test. In real world and "blend" type tests, I only ever saw it hit low-mid 70's. Mr-Mechraven seems to be getting similiar temps in normal benchmark situations, as do a bunch of other people. Even Small FFT Prime was hitting low 80s.. its just the very latest Aida64 doing FPU only that drives it way up. The "blended" version without all four components checked keep the temperatures in check.

Not saying I still don't have some cooling issue somewhere, but I'm starting to feel this is just the way it is with the super FPU intensive benchmarks, as it stays well within mid 50's in cpu heavy gaming situations, etc.

I agree with the case trapping heat though, it takes my video card quite a bit longer to cool down compared to my 500r. I do, however, like the silence trade off!

EDIT: I know I said I was hitting low 60's in my initial post, but I have changed some of the fan profiles that I found were off with Thermal Radar 2 and so on since then.. which definitely helped.

Wow the replies come in thick and fast on here smile.gif

As everyone is saying , have a play with the case cooling, if you can reduce the ambient temp around the cpu then the heat issues from the cpu should naturally be reduced.
as a side note, when I first installed my 965BE with the AMD Stock Screamer, my cpu would hit 90C+ admittedly it was around 30C in the room, but it took an aftermarket cooler (freezer7 initially) and some fan management, re-pasting to get the temps down to acceptable levels.
Now it has a CM TX3 and my corsair C70 and the cpu never goes above 52C.

anyway I digress.
good luck with your tinkering smile.gif
