4770k + Noctua NH-D14 temps - Page 3

Yeah, I'm gonna play with it anyways. I think my issue is a non-issue though, because in real world I'm hitting really OK temps in my eyes.. even a bit lower than my 2500k was at similiar "real" loads. Like I've said before, it's only going into the heavier side of things when I run things that are meant to destroy the FPU as much as possible. tongue.gif

Those tend to drive the processor closer to the upper thermal limits, well, for me anyways. In every day use, I know I'll never see temps anywhere near those situations.

@4.30Ghz 1.21v FPU only = 54-57C After 10 minutes thumb.gif

Maybe my case is indeed the issue then! And it's bathing in heat. I'm positive the heat sink is clamped down as tight as it can without damaging it, and the paste has been reapplied several times.

When it comes to these chips, is it possible different plants, etc. can create ones that handle thermals better?
Every single cpu is different , hence why they say it is a lottery, but sometimes some batch's turn out better than others.

With my temps you must bare in mind the H110 has a large surface area to disperse the heat, it's not a custom loop but it will certainly take away heat a little more effectively than an air cooler. Plus my case is large with no cables obstructing airflow, plus i have good cool airflow coming in via the window.

Experiment and tinker im sure you will drop temps, but like you say, for everyday gaming etc theres no big issue here if your within reasonable limits.

Yeah, I have a h100i "lying around" that I've considered hooking up. It was used on another rig of mine. I may go that route yet, but honestly.. I'm not going to be reaching super stressful temperatures that are pure synthetic tests....

I know I'll probably get hated on for this, but I actually went with the Noctua DH-14 instead of my H100i because I wanted a quieter PC.. and if I put that thing in this Fractal case.. I've essentially nullified a lot of the silence of it. :/ If I was using this is a pure bench/trying to push the limits of the machine.. then maybe.. but I'm honestly too lazy to rip the machine all apart again and refit everything, only to perhaps get close to the same temps in the end :X

Perfectly reasonable to want a quiet setup. That's what my rig is designed around, except I run it on a test bench. Trust me, it's very quiet.

But your temps are still high for that voltage. I really think it's your case fans. Time to snip off that rear mesh!

I think my next step is to load it full of fans to see what happens (when I get home). I have a few kicking around for testing. There's also this flow valve system on the Sabertooth that's supposed to help, and I think I have set them to open (when they should be closed as I was reading, helps with heatpipe air circulation or some such). Now, whether the latter is pure marketing fluff is yet to be determined...

EDIT: I think I'm gonna to start by adding two exhaust fans to the top fan slots (removing sound dampening material) and see if that helps pull some of the hot air out. I was just thinking about it in my head here @ work, and there's a lot of the radiator tower up in that area, so it's a good starting point to see if case fans would help..

wow those are insane temps going around i though a H100i v Noctua DH-D14 there would be little difference since Intel's max TDP for the 4770k only 84w (not much in compassion to I7 920 130w) would have thought that the maximum heat absorption would really have started to decrease after 1x 120 rad which from what i'v seen is similar to a Noctua DH-D14. I was going to build one of these system for family with a old NH-U12P Noctua cooler, starting to question whether it is even worth OCing since by the look of it Max volts i could use would be like 1.2v thus an oc of 4.1-. 4.3 (if i'm lucky) that really is nothing thats a 7% OC at Max when you take into account Turbo boost and when you consider likely applications a 4770K system would run all quite disappointingly honestly. Man AMD better get something amazing together soon or we will all have to deal with this type of S@*T for another few years.........OP and others the question remains worth OCing IYO?

Cheers smile.gif

Were you able to actually fit your Noctua fan in the motherboard? If so was it vertical? Because I have a Sabertooth Z87, and had to return my Noctua fan because I didnt want to fit facing horizontally like I wanted it to. I ended up getting a Corsair H100i instead.

It fit perfectly fine for me? I mean yeah, it's cramped but it fits. Is your case the issue? If you mean with the fans pointing toward the back and not up and down, then yes, I also installed it horizontally.

I read in a review site before I bought the board, and they also said they had no issue fitting the d14.
