From what I understand in this instance it is metadata of phone calls and not the actual content in the calls (most certainly not that I think it's okay, just stating what it is). Does anyone have a grasp on what the nature of the other PRISM ramifications are ALA Google, Facebook, ISP's, etc.?

It has actually been known for some time that the calls themselves were being recorded. This goes back to even when Princess Diana was still around, as the NSA 'accidentally' recorded calls between her and the Brazilian Prime Ministers wife.
